I have recently decided to join the military. I currently have a roommate who is listed as "head of household". My landlord has briefly indicated that we would not be able to get out of the lease because I have chosen to join instead of being drafted. My roommate is not open to having a new roommate. Do I/we have any rights under the service members civil relief act? Or any other law for that matter? There is no military clause in our contract. Any help would be extremely beneficial.

Hello b:

I don't think there is any relief for you. Your landlord COULD let you out of your lease if he wanted to... His reasoning that you enlisted instead of getting drafted is VERY hollow. Offer him an extra months rent and appeal to his patriotism, if he has any.

I have chosen to join instead of being drafted.

Really, why did you enlist? The US isn't drafting anyone.

Thank you Excon for the feedback.

Why I enlisted is not relevant to the question at hand. I am aware that the US is not drafting anymore.
