I filed for SSDI and was subsequently notified by the IRS that a previous employer still has 401k funds in my name. I contacted the employer & their representative and neither can find my name nor my funds. How do I find this money. I am in desperate need as I am homebound by disabilities.

Have you contacted the IRS and asked them to specify what funds they were talking about. Also the company you worked for normally does not keep the 401K money, but it is sent to the ADMIN company that does their accounts. So ask your past companies what 401K companies they used, and contact those companies

Fr Chuck, please see the extended info for the question. Your advice is appreciated but I have already done what you suggest. Any other ideas are welcome though. Thank you.

I am sorry your message only says you contacted your past employers and THEIR representatives, no where does it state you contacted the actual 401K company ( they are often a money management or brokerage company) and have no real connection to your work place except to manage these funds)

Also at times these companies change, so you have to check with human resourse that they did not change those companies since then.

Also some plans require you to take funds out within a certain amount of time after leaving that employment or the funds may be lost.

But short of that, no there is no national data base, if the IRS has notice it is because they are paying intererest also, and you would have to be getting a notice of that yearly at your mailing address on file at the time you left that company. * unless you notified them of your move.

Also you should have in your tax records receipts and notices of who you paid the funds into when you did your taxes
