The condenser makes a lot of noise when it is working (quiet when in the defrost cycle). Loud enough that I can hear it both upstairs and downstairs. Maintenance guys in my complex say that it's just old and that there's nothing that can be done about it. I asked whether someone could come out and fix it. They replied that the complex just replaces them when they break. This one isn't broken, so it won't be replaced. Frustrating. Any ideas?

Thanks.

The continuios noise you are hearing while the unit is running is not the condencer , but the compressor or the cabinet evaporator fan , in either case , if its an old unit in the long run its probably more effiecient to replace the refrigerator it not only will save you in monthly electrical bill , but it will also save you from a most definite complete failure of the unit and the spoiling of your weely shopping products , and you will end up spending a whole day, if not a whole weekend looking a good deal and a fridge that best suits your needs in either case it sounds like the fridge has done its job over the years and from your posting information its hard to conclude to weather the cost for a new fridge is coming out of your pocket , or if it's the responsibility of the agency your renting from. if its not your responsibility all you have to say is the noise from the fridge keeps waking you up at night with the noise and its acting erractically with the cooling and freezing and that should be enough to make them replace it , and if its your responsibility , well the cost for a service technicinan to come out and replace a just a compressor , will come pretty close to the cost of a new fridge , and there may be other problems that are causing the compressor to fail , anyway I hope this information helps you in your decision , good luck
