Hi Alty and Stringer!
I'm doing an essay on moral education and I need examples of films, discussions, seminars that help in educating people about morality. Any ideas? (if you don't mind and can spare some time, that is)
Alty
Jan 6, 2010, 10:58 PM
What about TV shows Unky?
I always found "Little House on the Prairie" to be a great example about teaching morality.
I'd have to think about it some more to come up with other examples. I'll try to post some tomorrow. That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head. :)
Unknown008
Jan 6, 2010, 11:01 PM

Yes, anything from the media (my present paragraph is how media can teach morality)
EDIT: I googled, 'american' term is perhaps better suited.

It's no longer in syndication though. Do you need something that's current?
Unknown008
Jan 6, 2010, 11:15 PM
Well, it was okay, thanks! :)
I'm done with that paragraph, now onto the next, about sports and morality. I'm talking about how sport teaches young people values... and I guess I'll find examples quite easily here.
Ok, my other paragraphs in my planning:
environmental ethics (how to improve)
religion (as a tool to improve morality)
cultural values (same thing)
role modelling of popular people (the 'greats' like M Gandhi, M Theresa, A. Lincoln, A. Einstein, etc)
I think I'm okay in finding examples in each of them. It was only about media that I had a little problem... nowadays, we don't find much as good examples, we have more violence (action) films. I hesitate with cartoons though
Thanks again! :)

Good Morning everbody. Can someone please help me out and give me a greenie on one of my posts? A somewhat new person gave me a reddie and called me stupid. The OP asked for ways to tell a guy no and I simply suggested a few ways. I would give that person a reddie back but I don't want to stoop that low. Here is the thread and you can read it. If it looks like a deserved a reddie then so be it and everyone who looks at it can give me one because I deserved it.

I'm now on my next essay, marriage. The question is 'What are the causes of divorce? Provide appropriate solutions'
The causes I came up with:
Absence of trust/Infidelity
Domestic Violence
'Empty shell marriage'
Lack of physical contact
Less social stigma (I'm not sure how stigma arises when you get divorced )
Pressures from in-laws
Economic freedom
Education-one knows one's rights
Incompatibility
'Erreur sur la personne' (the person didn't know the partner well enough)
Erosion of moral values - Religious provisions (don't quite understand this one either)
Laws simplified (does that mean divorce procedures are simpler?)
Ok, I've not started yet. I won't add things I'm not sure about and the only things I really need are examples and the solutions. I know you guys know a lot of stuff about those ;).

When it comes to money problems there are group counseling places and people that will come to your home, help you balance your cheque book, take a look at what you're spending, what you're bringing in and helping you to cut back so that you're not always living pay cheque to pay cheque.
As for sex. If there is a lack of sex in the relationship then counseling is a definite must, in my opinion. No sex is usually an indicator of a larger problem. Deal with that problem and things resume to normal.
Infidelity is very common. Usually the unfaithful partner is stepping outside the marriage because their needs aren't being fulfilled at home. There's usually a lack of communication, and the person feels like they have nowhere to turn. Sex outside the marriage usually doesn't have as much to do with physical need as it has to do with emotional need. Counseling is a definite must if they want the relationship to be saved.

It depends on the counseling, the counselor, it also depends on what the couple is going into counseling for.
Most couples that go to counseling to get help with dealing with an extramarital affair sadly do not make it. It's a hard thing to accept. It's a hard thing to get over.
As for counseling for financial issues, I don't know the percentage of success but I would guess that it's a lot higher then 10 - 12%.
Sorry Unky, I don't have the stats at my fingertips and you've already googled so that obviously won't help. :(
Unknown008
Jan 8, 2010, 12:25 AM
Anyway, you were of great help !:) Thank you!
I guess those are some sort of advertisements that try to deter people from going to counsellors.
Oh, does it exist, a place where couples are allowed to stay together in a home to get to know each other better before getting married? I seem to have heard of that, but I'm not sure...
Alty
Jan 8, 2010, 12:27 AM
I've never heard of that Unky.
I know that there is marriage counseling for couples planning to get married. A lot of churches offer it. R and I had to go through some classes at the church before we got married. With R's wise arse remarks I'm surprised that the Pastor didn't kick us out. ;)

Well, no reference required. It's a basic essay. You are given a title, you only need to develop. Then, it is good, my teacher says to support my ideas with concrete examples. I'm trying my best to find some, but it's not that easy at times for certain topics.
Like for example, if I had an essay on advantages and disadvantages of an extended family. Of course, there are arguments, but the examples? Perhaps I can take the royal family of England, and then, I need different examples to support each idea. It's a real pain to do that... :(

Wow. Your work load seems so much heavier then what I ever had to do. I don't even remember it being that much in college.
The worse project I have had was I had to create a company and write out this big thing. I had to explain what it was and why I felt the need for it in the economy. I had to do a report on the money end of it like my cost and expenses and assets and all of it. Just every detail. Then I had to get up in front of the class to try and sell it. Uuggghhhh it was such a long process and so much research and I hated it.

Jan 8, 2010, 07:27 AM
Well, that's because I 'build up' work :o
I had the robot project, then the MUN conference, then examinations (by the way, those essays are work for tuition). I don't like to have given less work than I should have done. The teacher doesn't mind much about it, he will just put 'quite regular' instead of 'regular' a card he uses to keep record of the payments. I just feel I have to do those... even if I don't want to.

Hi unky, yes it is, our grit supplies are running low so the councils are only gritting where necessary and apparently our gas supplies are running dangerously low as well.
Driving at the moment is very dangerous, and I've got to make my journey back to the midlands soon and there's more snow on the way :)
Unknown008
Jan 8, 2010, 08:05 AM
Oh, yeah, BBC also showed how driving was difficult. They showed a small car going round a corner at about 10 km/h and it skidded. It skidded despite the low speed... oh and an elderly woman who slipped because of the frozen road. They said that there were even some people trapped in their homes during the festivities...
Must be the climate change issue...

For the most part our weather here in southeastern Ontario has been pretty good. Temps have been -10c most days, although today we are enjoying -8c !
Some snow and slippeery driving conditions. A tractor trailer carrying a load of steel pipes jacknifed across the 40l (6 lane hwy at this point) not causing much damage and no one was seriously injured, thank god. This stretch of our highway going east to Montreal and west to Toronto is not the best in snowy weather.
The good news is, our days are getting a little longer, more daylight is what I mean, and cross country skiing is excellent right now.

Rationing grit! There's a bloody war on with the county councils, there was NO grit for a few days, and when it came they only did the main roads, not the smaller roads or paths which were deadly..
The army offered help to get to old people and people stranded but they were told no thanks.. its a joke really.

I don't blame you being scared of ice, I've driven in ice storms where the roads had 1-2" of solid ice. I've driven when LONG double-decker bridges on interstaes were iced over and I've driven where the bridge in front of you was iced and the roads were clear. I made it. The car behind me panicked and ended up crashed into the bridge.
I was about 17" and slipped on a patcch of ice on a curve, It was tough re-gaining control of the car. FUN. Learned lesson early. Now it doesn't bother me.
Cop told me to get off the road and I found him on a snowbank hen I returned.
I guy did donuts in front of a donut shop. About 4 of us avoided him. Then one idiot hit every one of us. There were no cops in the donut shop, so when we called, they said why don't you come to us which was maybe a mile down the road.
I don't mind it any more. Deep mud is MUCH more difficult to get out of. Trust me!

Hi, Muddy. Are they?
Yeah I crashed into some sturdy boys. It was funny. Because the hill was way high and I was screaming from the top to the bottom hahah I wasn't scared but then again I was. The crashing part hurts but it's so darn funny!
