Hmmm very good point there...

The economy is trying to get better here, but the Gov is nuts... they are increasing the interest rate too much too fast, and we are going to sink back down again soon... they thought the interest rates and increasing the cost of living here would help...

How come these people who make decisions have these jobs in the first place?

Well mine is subsidized because I NEED it, so I'm not paying interest on it, and this one is only about $3500. But in the long run, They'll get paid off once I have a good job and a steady income. :)

I was 21 and it was 6 months before I was to get married. I was with a friend who was also to marry my sister. We were on a highway and like you we had to stop just over a hill as a tractor trailer was pulling onto the road. I was just over the hump in the road. I had a bad feeling, and as I looked back out the back window... there he came at about 60 mpr. I had my arm inside the steering wheel and was pushed through the windshield and flung back over the seat (no head rests then). My scap was bleeding like a sive. My arm was pulled out of the shoulder socket and the muscles from my shoulder blade were ripped in two. My car was shoved up over the back of the car in front of me and rolled over three times down over a hill, no seat belts either.

I spent 2 weeks in the hospital and had my arm taped to my chest for 3 months. Jim, the guy with me was all bloody with two breaks in his arm and a broken leg and foot. He spent 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital and had neck traction 6 times.

Had a lousy attorney, didn't even get enough to pay all the bills... but he got his!

Can you talk to her after class?

Just remember that she's just as nervous as you. It took a lot of guts for her to approach you. She's not an alien, she's just a girl. We really aren't that different from guys. ;)

Tell her you'd love to hang out. Maybe go for a bite to eat, or a movie, or just a place that other kids your age hang out.

Just remember one thing. Girls don't like guys that play games, but they also don't like guys that come on too strong. Don't be desperate, just be her friend for now and see where it leads.

Above all, have fun! That's an order. ;)

What's funny bear is that this happened 6 months before my first marriage. 6 months before my marriage to Marta I fell from an 8 foot ladder to the concrete floor of my garage. I smashed 2 vertebrates in my neck, I almost didn't make it. The surgeon gave me a 50 / 50 chance to survive and he said that if I did I would be paralyzed. He worked a miracle, in that all I have is some pain in the right side of my neck and a slight numbness in my right hand.

Wow, I have two vertebrates from a dead man in my neck... (I hear voices... 'what?' hee hee).

Although this might be a warning so to speak, two accidents 6 months before each wedding but this time it was a blessing... so to speak... getting my lovely Marta.

She's probably not allowed to date unless her parents meet you first. I know that was the rule in my house. It means her parents love her and she respects them and their wishes.

So, if you want to date her, you'll have to meet the parents. Put on a nice outfit, be respectful, and don't worry about it too much. Parents were kids once too. ;)

Just be yourself. Let them know that you're a nice guy, that you'll respect their wishes and will have their daughter back at a reasonable hour. Let them know where you're taking her. If you have a cell phone then give them the number so they can check up on her. Also ask for their number so you can call them in case something happens.

As for a gift. No. That's not necessary. You're just taking their daughter out on a date. Just dress nice, make sure you're showered, clean, hair brushed, matching socks on, shoes polished. But most important, be yourself.

Okay?

Everything that Alty said to you is gold... take her advice...

As a parent and someone who actually started dating too soon I would say that being polite and courteous are very important.

Be very respectful, even saying 'sir or ma'am' when addressing he parents. When they enter the room, stand up, it shows respect... but don't forget to sit back down.

Be aware of your cleanliness and don't use too much after shave or cologne. Get a haircut before you meet them and even polish your shoes... yes.

When they speak to you listen carefully and pay attention. Answer clearly and don't mumble. And make sure that you are looking at them when you speak to them.

They may ask you some questions; 'how are you?' 'Where do you live?' 'how did you meet my daughter?' 'Where are you two going tonight?' Etc...

Be prepared to answer these questions. And a hint, ask her a little bit about her parents first before you visit. This will help.

First impressions are important... but relax... do the above but you can relax by telling yourself that it really won't be that bad at all.

Are we sharing a brain Stringer? ;)

I remember the first time R came to meet my mom and dad. The poor guy had it pretty bad.

My dad loved to kid. He loved to make the guys I brought home really nervous.

The meeting started with R coming in and stepping on the dog. Not a good start. The dog yiked and limped off. The fact that the dog came back was a great sign. My dog hated every guy before that. He never came to any of them, but here's R, stepping on him and Silver still came back for cuddles.

My dad asked him a million questions. Stupid things like "do you like hockey?", "have you ever been arrested?", "were you charged?", "what do you plan on doing with my little girl?".

It went downhill from there.

When R and I had been together for 2 months my parents decided that they wanted to go on vacation during the summer, to Penticton. They wanted me to come.

In typical teen fashion I refused to go unless my boyfriend could go. There was no way I was going to spend 2 weeks without him. I'd die! ;)

So they agreed. My mom called R's mom to ask if it was okay. It was all set.

Then came the clincher. R and I didn't want to stay in the motorhome. My parents went to bed before the sun went down. We had a car, we were young, there was a nice city with clubs, we wanted to go out and have fun. So we decided to take the tent along. My mom and dad flipped. No way were we going to sleep together in the tent. My Uncle was going to be there, what would he say?

After a lot of talking, some begging, a bit of crying and a lot of promises, they agreed to let us both sleep in the tent. My dad however decided that a little man to boy talk was in order.

The conversation went something like this;

"If my daughter gets pregnant. If she so much has a hickey on her neck or a bruise on her lips, I just went you to know that I'm Hungarian, I have friends, I also know people with acres of land. I have a shovel and a gun and I doubt anyone will miss you. Now have fun!"

Poor R. I'm surprised we ever got married. Funny thing is, my dad adored him. On his death bed my dad said "I couldn't have picked someone better for my daughter. I know that you'll take care of her. I don't have to worry that she'll be okay. You are the man I wanted for her."

Darnit, now I'm crying. Stupid memories. :(

The conversation went something like this;

That was really beautiful Alty.

I'm thinking about it. Seriously thinking about it. The thing is, I need a job now. I can't wait until April and I don't want to apply to other positions if there's a chance that I can't commit to stay with them for the long haul.

Decisions, decisions. Where's Stringer? I need his input.

JoeCanada76
Dec 11, 2009, 11:58 PM
I personally think you should apply to them, for the April position.

Then try to find a job now that you know is short contract or not long term that will just help you along until then.

Do not burn any bridges. Apply for the one in April. Try to find one now, for the mean time. Your not obligated to be in any job long term.

As long as you know your going to another job or once you know for sure then you can decide then.

Alty
Dec 12, 2009, 12:02 AM
True Joe.

I guess I'll apply. It's a good position, the pay is good and it's permanent, unlike this last one.

Also, I'd be working in the same clinic and I know a lot of people there already. They're great people. I'm going to miss them. :(

Alty

True.

But what if I apply and I don't get it? I know that a few of the other temps are going to apply for the same position. If I don't get it I'll be heartbroken.

I know, I know, can't win if you don't try. But, if you don't try then you can't lose. Right? ;)

JoeCanada76
Dec 12, 2009, 12:19 AM
It is better to lose trying then to lose from not trying at all.

If you do not try at all, then you have no chance at all to be able to get that position.

Overthinking, I do the same for everything but will not get you any further ahead.

Take the chance. What do you have to lose right now, nothing.

Alty
Dec 12, 2009, 12:24 AM

Good night Joe. I'm waiting up for hubby. He should be home in 1/2 hour or so. I need some quality time. If you know what I mean. ;)

Stringer
Dec 12, 2009, 07:53 AM
People say 'why worry?' I say, when I worry I think about the situation or problem a lot and thinking provides 'juice' for answers. Many times I will purposely think about the problem just before I go to sleep, funny how my mind will sort through things better when I sleep and in the morning I usually have a few solution possibilities and occasionally an answer.

Everything that Joe said, I agree with him, you know that I would, he's a pretty bright guy.

If you want this job or at this point a job, cover all your bases Alty. Send out applications and resumes' to all the jobs that you would like to have. Play the numbers game, saturate the job market. Especially now since more people are looking for jobs. As I said before, any position that appeals to you follow up with phone calls, letters, etc. Go after it the same way that a salesperson would trying to sell something. After all, in this sense you are a commodity and you want to sell your skills to the 'buyer.'

If you 'connect' with one of them you can hopefully build a quick rapport and with everything else being equal this will definitely advance your cause.

Also, when I talk with new salespeople in my company one of the things I tell them is 'talk to everyone;' neighbors, friends, friends of friends, the milkman, etc. Their response is 'why, the milkman doesn't own a building that we can clean?' My response; 'sure, I know, however who does he know that may?' 'Cover all your bases.'

And you want to do everything possible to make your application/resume' stand out. Nothing does this better than having someone you know or will get to know that works there already... great reference.

You have recently been through the interview process and you did just grand and got the job. Now take that confidence to getting a new one. Confidence comes shinning through like a bright light, companies like that.

'He who hesitates... loses.' Work at getting a job just like a job.

Research all opportunities.

Follow up with a formal resume.

(A lot of people think that resumes' are just for high paying jobs, not so and a good resume will relate that you are professional and care enough to take the time to do this the right way.)

Talk to anyone and everyone. Because everyone knows someone who knows someone else.

(Waiting to have someone come to you because 'they know that I need a job' is something that baffles me.)

And finally, getting a job now and then having another call you later for one... well isn't having choices nice? Should that occur, listen to them, explore it thoroughly, it may be the job that you wanted all the while.

But maybe not, maybe the one that you have now turned out to be the one that really 'works' for you... but you will have that choice and will be confident because you are already working.

Spend the time and work this just like a job and your efforts should produce some good results.

And most people will not do this. Yes, they will put in applications, they may talk to a few people but not to the efforts that we are talking about here...

'Go for it!' -Joe

Let me tell you about a job. I had just gotten laid off from the paper I was working at. I ran into an old high school buddy that I hadn't seen for a decade. His brother had just gotten himself fired from the local Orkin office. I applied, but they kept asking about experience and all I had was killing fleas in our kennels, so I didn't think I'd get past the first interview. By the time I got home they wanted to know when I could start (this was long before cell phones) and now it's twenty years later, I have a degree, a master's certificate, and half a company.

All of that is to re-emphasize Stringer's suggestion that you talk to EVERYBODY

A 'light' Santa joke:::

Santa's Bad Day
The Birth of a Tradition

One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress.
Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys.

So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hidden the liquor, and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider pot, and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw end of the broom. Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa trudged to the door. He opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.

The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?"
Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

Seriously, had you not heard it before? It's been around for a long time. It floored me the first time I heard it, I think that was the first time ROFL was actually true in my case.

But it does bring up the question "if angels have arseholes, do the products smell?"

Actually I suppose this may be proof that age and the 'benefits' thereof are showing up, I do not remember hearing it before.

But I admire your use of the sledgehammer in nailing it... :)

Happy Sunday, do you have all your Christmas displays up yet?

Like an addicted fiend, I will 'force' myself to watch the Bears get annihilated again today.

Adam... Good luck with the Colts today and I am hopping the Saints win also.

Pittsburgh... what can I say? Last year's Super Bowl Champs and last Thursday loose again and this time to the lowly Browns... terrible. My football su*ks this year!

Please don't use the words "pittsburgh" and "football" in the same sentence. It's just so painful. Or was that payback?

I just put my manger scene up. That's the last of it.

Yes, a manger scene. I know. I'm not Christian yet I have a manger scene. The kids haven't made a choice yet, and so far they believe in God in Jesus, and all of that. So who am I to put a damper on it?

They also believe in Santa. ;)

LOL! This will look really cool after I clean off the other nail polish. . Hahah
It's easier to do with fake nails before you put them on, but I don't wear them so I made a mess. Once I get it off it'll look really interesting, but I have to laugh at the mess I made of my hands, because it took me over an hour to do. :)

ohsohappy
Dec 15, 2009, 02:43 PM
and a very well made mess it is, you must have been working really hard over that hours :)

Haha yeah. Well what you have to do is let a drop of nail polish fall into some water (I used an old sour cream container) and then drop different colors in to the middle of the circle and dip the nail in to it and remove the excess before you take your nail out of the water. Well, I couldn't remove the excess because when I tried it would clump and I'd have to remove it and start the whole process over again. So I did what I do best and I made a mess! I just let the extra stuff stay on my hand, I'll use nail polish remover on it later. :) my mom said' she'd help.

HAHA

Just a little tip for next time.

Try taping around your finger nails, or cut out the tips of rubber gloves when you do your nails. Cutting out cardboard, shaped like your nails, is also a way to go. Just hold it on or tape it, paint then remove carboard. Voilą, pretty as a picture. :)

I do the tape thing. It's time consuming but less so then trying to get excess polish off later without ruining your paint job. ;)
