Hi Priyaathreya:

An Strap is illegal to begin with... a pretty good "plumbing reason" not to use them... ;)

An Strap goes straight into the floor which means that the trap can't be influenced by a vent. This leads to clogged drains, siphoned drains, and can lead to sewer gasses escaping from the trap... a health hazard.

Let me know if that answered the question...

Mark gsave you a excellent answer. All plumbing codes require that every trap shall be vented. "S" traps,(see image) have no vents and so are illegal in every state and Canada for the reason Mark gave you. Regards, Tom
