I know a guy who has two children (1yr & 3yrs)- the mother has had the children since they were born until six (6) weeks ago when she dropped them off on his door step (still in car seats) and left she has not been seen or heard from until just the other day. She wanted to stop by and see the kids. Well this is fine with the babies father he doesn't mind keeping the children however he isn't working and is relying on his father to take care of him his two babies, his younger brother and sister and of coarse the income is low. With this in mind my friend tried to get assistance to help with food and such for the kids but is not able because she is claiming them on her food stamps and wic and apparently she doesn't plan on stopping her benefits since she has another child on the program that doesn't belong to my friend. He would like to get custody but since he isn't working and only sharing a small apartment with his family how can he do this or at least get some assistance. By the way he has been trying to find a job but as you know things are hard, right now he will take just about anything so if you know of any please let me know that to.

First, please pay more attention to posting guidelines. There is a Read First sticky at the top of the Children forum (where this was moved from) which directs questions of a legal nature here.

Since he has an extended family helping him, I think he can go for primary custody. Go to the local Family Court and apply for Full physical custody. With such custody, he can then get public assistance transferred to him.
