All the medical experts may frown at this, but many moms know that the only way their baby would ever sleep was to put them in their crib, on their stomach, in a dark room, with no noise around them, maybe even a white noise in the background.

Once he gets on a rhythm of sleeping for 45 min-1hr, you have to force yourself to take a nap at the same time he does, so you can have enough energy to take care of him.

How is he sleeping at night?

Most of the time, is he happy or fussy?

Do you have him on any type of a routine? Breakfast, lunch, dinner, bath, rest time (even if he doesn't sleep)?

Are you constantly worrying about him and when you put him down for a nap checking on him every couple of minutes or attending to him every time he makes a noise?

As new parents (yes, you still are :) ), we tend to over-stimulate our children and ourselves without realizing it. Children tend to pick up on our emotions and stresses and it affects them, too. Sometimes just sitting back and allowing your child to feel you relaxing will help them relax enough to nap. Yoga, needlework, jigsaw puzzles, reading, anything that helps you slow down and relax and become boring can help.

Talk to your health care worker. A five month old baby should be sleeping for at least five hours at night or more with an afternoon nap of a couple of hours. I agree with the post above about putting him down at bedtime, room dimly lit, with little or no noise and, so long as you know he is not wet, hungry or in pain, leave him to settle on his own.
