How could you not fall in love with that face , exotic "hairdo" and those eyes that shine with such obvious intelligence?

He is a handsome devil.
It is easy to see that dog is well cared for and well loved.

Great pics, great dog, great owner.
A trifecta to be proud of.

Awwww thank you everyone :)

He's too smart for his own good sometimes!
I haven't had to limit his outdoor time at all over summer, he will sunbake for about 15 minutes and then he goes and lays in the shade for the same, then back to the sun... he rotates so he doesn't get burned, just tanned.

And yes, I can't believe it Cat, it will be 1 year in just a few weeks time... scary, feels like only a few months ago he arrived!

Dahlia, they are Colorado Brand sneakers... I love slip on shoes and the criss-crossed elastic makes them SUPER comfy!

Heheh Shazzy, Lady and max love the snow. You should see them go wild when there is enough snow on the ground to roll around in. They don't usually stay out too long with out their coats.

Ah yes, brook's update, well that may be difficult. I don't think she will agree to have her image displayed on an international site again. After all, there are over-exposure issues you know. She doesn't want to ruin her chances with further international opportunities. One has to be so careful, doesn't one.

Aww, I bet she is doing great anyways Tick. Happy, healthy pup.

She is a sweet dog, AB and yes healthy and happy and a complete clown most of the time. She has her spot at the front window on the big leather chair just watching for something to 'hound' bark at, if you know what I mean. I have no excuse for not posting a new pic of her, just very busy these days.

Love that face.

I have fallen in love with the breed Dogue de Bordeaux, I'm not allowed! Can you believe that not allowed!

Awww he is so cute.. Congrats on your new addition! Congrats to the puppy as well for finding his new forever home

I went to a festival this weekend, actually it was just a long road in Calgary with different businesses and community groups. Anyway, they had 3 different rescue groups with pups there to be adopted... I begged and pleaded but hubby made me realize that we can not afford another dog at this time. Owen needs to have his surgery done first. Still my heart was just aching for these pups, I hate seeing animals with no forever home.

I would like to introduce everyone to the newest member of our household, Dresden.

36522

He is 12-18 months old. He was found by a police officer on the firing range about six months ago. Skin, bones, and worms. The officer took him in and saved his life. Nursed him back to health after the vet said that the pup probably wouldn't make it. He is now a healthy young man who needs more attention than the officer's older dog was willing to let him have. So, he put him up for adoption.

He obviously was not treated well before or while he was on his own (I am afraid he probably was an abandoned hunting dog. It happens around here.) However, the officer did a great job of healing the body and soul. He is an absolutely wonderful pup.

We had started looking for another dog about Chloe's age and size. I saw his picture and fell in love.

Chloe has adopted him. Wednesday night when we brought him home they spent four hours straight playing with each other. Part of that time was Chloe showing him how to use the doggie door.

I'll put up better pictures of him later and we can have fun playing 'guess the breed/breeds.' :)

Thanks, Bella, but the person who rescued him was the officer. We are just opening our home to him.

There does appear to be lab in him and I thought Collie, too, until I saw his tail. He generally keeps it curled rather tightly over his back. I am trying to get a picture with it up, but he doesn't care for the flash on the camera and the tail goes down as fast as Chloe's ear when you want it to stay up.

I will admit that over the past year, I had forgotten how much fun a double coat is when it comes to shedding.

Aurora_Bell

Oh cat, oh so lovely, look so much like a Walker hound. I love him, can I have him if you don't want him. Love the nose, hound eyes, probably a sight, scent and sound hound dog. My taffy was one of those and was a pleasure beyond belief well into her elder years, bless her heart. Cherish Dresden.

He almost looks Beagleish.

Cat1864
Jun 17, 2011, 04:52 PM
Tick, you may have hit on the main part of his breeding. Walkers are very common hunting dogs around here and the firing range is an area that sees a lot of them dumped after hunting season. (It is very hard not to blow up just thinking about the irresponsible 'dog' hunters.)

Hands on he is all hound. Which mixture may be anyone's guess.

I am going to try to get better pictures of him. Also some updated pics of Chloe. I tend to forget just how big she is until she stands next to another dog.

Dresden looks exactly like my taffy's mom who was purebred Walker Hound; taffy was l/2 something else. Taf was about 70 lbs. and all legs, huge hound, sight and scent type of hound dog.

Thanks, Shaz and Red. :)

He's approximately 21-22 inches. Like Chloe, he doesn't like being measured.

He has freckling on his legs and muzzle that gives him a bit of a 'muddy' look.

His tail is strong and thick from dock to tip.

He has a broad head and thick neck.

He really does not bark very much. It is more of a yip.

Cats says that he uses his paws like a Boxer, but I haven't seen him use them any differently than most other dogs we've had that definitely weren't Boxers.

He is very intelligent and is picking up our commands rather quickly.

Bella , when he grows into those legs you may need a saddle for him. ;) Great looking pup.

Ha ! Well from the entire pic of your lovely dog I can see the resemblance to Taffy's mom is a little skewed. The tail doesn't match, her's was straight out and not bushy, but Basenjis have that kind of tail and you say he doesn't bark, just yips, Basenjis yip. (Maybe some Kangaroo in there to, if he boxes), just kidding!

Lovely animal. You are lucky to have him and he is lucky to have you !

Here are some recent pictures of some of my coonie diners

Pictures by twinkiedooter - Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/cooniepictures)

More to come when I take photos that come out. The subjects like to move around while eating. Right after the last photo there was a huge coonie fight and everyone left.

Use the slideshow feature to see captions.

I haven't seen the skunks lately. There are 4 of them all differently marked and very cute. Plus the possums haven't been up since it got warm out.

Wow! Very cute. You are one brave lady Twinks. I would be scared to have those critters in my home. I don't mind feeding them outside, they seem to stay out of the garbage and compost bins when I willingly feed them. But now the foxes are coming around too. In hind site it probably wasn't the best idea to feed the wild life.

Wow! Very cute. You are one brave lady Twinks. I would be scared to have those critters in my home. I don't mind feeding them outside, they seem to stay out of the garbage and compost bins when I willingly feed them. But now the foxes are coming around too. In hind site it probably wasn't the best idea to feed the wild life.

Those coonies ARE outside on my covered porch. I now have 3 babies probably 2 months old that come up. They are so cute and timid eating with their front paws.

Last night I had 3 kids and 4 adults. It was standing room only at the 3 bowls. I have a video feature on my digital camera and will try to take a video of them. I'll post it on Photobucket when I get it.

Oh yes, I also have 3 different skunks that come up regularly to eat. AND 3 oppossums as well. And I've had some coyotes come up on the porch hunting for a coonie sandwich.

I can see all this out my backdoor window in safety. Wow did those coyotes ever smell like wet dog! Skunks don't let off though.

And Bella I just adore your new moose! He's so cute. Maybe one day he'll grow into his legs and paws. He's going to be a big boy in about 2 years.

My Russian lady friend has a white Arctic fox and a huge (250 lb Siberian Timberwolf) AND a small black cat. She holds the cat in her arms and the wolf and fox trot alongside her. Lady (the wolf) is very protective of her and she can't go 3 feet away from her owner. The fox sleeps during the day and is active at night digging holes in the carpet, her bedding until she trained the fox not to.

She also has an entire flock of little ground owls and a flock of big Snowy White Owls (like the ones in Harry Potter movies) that she feeds each night. They adore french fries and pretzels and any kind of fish. She calls them all "Bob" as all the owls bob their heads up and down and then dive into the food. The little Bobs and the big Bobs. More seems to be coming over every day for goodies and the ones that live on her property are getting plump.

I was wondering what the hell a coonie was! When I saw the pictures I had an 'ahh' moment. But, I would lose a pound of flesh in fear if I saw one of those at the back door, id probably mistake it for a badger, but then badgers don't like people, so I would just scream.

I turn on the 40W porchlight periodically looking for them. They can see me looking out at them but they are not concerned. If I need to put more food into the bowls and I make noise opening the doorlock they will scatter down the steps or Stretch likes to dawdle and look startled at me and then saunter down the steps.

They are quite timid and run off at the slightest noise. The little kids are not used to the porchlight and run down the stairs sometimes when I turn it on. The old hands don't bother running away from the light. I try not to keep the light on too much otherwise they may confuse a headlight of a car for the porchlight and get run over.

Have had Big Mama come up for the last 9 years all seasons. She's getting pretty old now for a coonie so I would imagine this is her last summer here.

The coonies didn't come up much last winter when it snowed a lot. Odd but the possums and skunks came instead in the snow. In the morning I would see distinct paw prints in the snow on the porch and know who showed up.

I don't think you have raccoons in Ireland. Europe and Russia don't seem to have them either. I think they are strictly a North American animal. They usually range in the 20 lb when fully grown adult. Mine are probably around 25-30 lbs. Big Daddy is a really plump coonie probably in the 30 lb category.

When I lived in South Florida I would take my son (then age 4) to Dania Beach and let him feed a band of raccoons that lived there amongst the mangrove trees. They were so tame that he could feed them out of his hand crackers or bread. The beach was developed and the raccoons were relocated elsewhere. My son wants to kidnap one of the babies but I told him Stretch would bang on the door demanding her kid back. Some people actually keep them as pets. I had a friend in Florida who had a pet skunk!

The kids chortle to the mamas and the mamas chortle right back. Very unusual sound. They will also nip at each other if one gets too close to a bowl. Big Daddy uses his rump to rump up to another coonie without getting his face bit so he can eat.

My dad's friend has a pet raccoon. He used to work at a movie theater and brought home a couple 20 gallon trash bags full of stale popcorn, and the coon had all the bags open and everywhere by the time he got back out of the restroom bringing them home!

Just wanted to share two new foster babies coming my way. Nibbles is a one year old staffy, was bred once before being seized from her dog house. She has to have her tail amputated due to a botched at home tail docking. She will probably be staying with me the longest. And the next is a totally new to me breed. An Old English Sheep Dog. He was part of a puppy farm, but has an amazing temperament so far. I bet he won't take long to find his forever home. A total goof he is.

Lovely staffy, with that one crooked ear, she will find a forever home soon. She is lovely looking dog. How is her temperament? Does she have one tooth poking out there too? With the crooked ear and the tooth sticking over her lip, gives her 'now what' attitude.

You are wonderful to be a foster mom AB, takes a lot of patience but I feel you are the right person for the job ! Keep me posted on 'nibbles' please.

As for the old english sheepdog, high maintenance, will herd anything it sees, even kids, rabbits, whatever. I know this breed well.

I will put in my two cents for Brookie (there is staffy in her AB by the way. I can tell by her head shape and her deep chest). She ripped her dewclaw in half trying to climb the maple tree after a squirrel. Silly little bugger also chases planes going over, and the Bluejays in the backyard give her a run for the money.

Thanks Tick! So far from what I have seen, Nibbles is her whole own being. She is has a great personality. She will look at you while you talk and give you this look that seems to say, "I know"! She is very well behaved. Eager to please. She kind of keeps her mouth open in a half crooked smile. Everything about her has character. :)

Miser, he is an old guy, kind of just loafs around. Doesn't need much encouragement to move around. He is quite content taking the biggest and the best dog pillow and that's where he stays. He had a hair cut today. All except the bangs. He looks like a new man. I'll have to upload the pics tonight.

Mind if I add some of my pets here?

I find that many people don't seem to like them so if you're squeamish at all, look away! You've been warned!

We do have a dog, 3 cats, a mouse, and some fish but... these pics are of my own pets as the rest of the family would prefer to not even acknowledge their presence. They make great pets though as long as you're not looking to cuddle. They're quiet, no odor, cheap to maintain after the initial expense.

odinn, welcome to the 'pictures of our pets' thread. Great pictures. Do they have names?

Thank you.
The first one is a Mexican Redknee, Ramona... the 2nd is a Desert Blonde named Zombie... and the 3rd is a Chilean Rose Hair named Pandora.

I have had spiders since 1995 when I got my first tarantula because I thought it was "cool". I started to learn about them and now I am quite the "dork" when it comes to spiders... lol.

Two that I don't have any more... they died... The first one is an undetermined species that was sold to me as a Rose Hair but certainly turned out not to be. She was also the first tarantula I had and she finally died in 2009. The 2nd is a Cobalt Blue that I only had for about 2 years. There was something wrong with her when I got her and she never fully recovered from it.

Hi odinn, you obviously understand spiders, some people don't when having them as pets, that's why they get sickly. Spiders done recover easily from this 'gentle' form of abuse.

Tickle... Yes, I know all about them. Different species require different care. If you notice, from the pictures, some dig, others don't for example. I do know what you mean as I have seen plenty of sickly tarantulas even in pet stores where they think they know how to care for them but really have no clue. The Cobalt Blue that I had was a "rescue" from a pet store as she was all dehydrated and worn out looking. I did manage to bring her back for almost 2 years but I suspect that she had just been through too much. It was a shame, the pictures don't show all that well, but she was a brilliant blue color.

Odinn, you are responsible pet owner, I am glad of that, even for spiders. I only have to deal with the little ones that hide in laundry baskets, because the clothes are warm, and bite when you put your pajamas on.If there is anything I hate it is an itchy spider bite.

Have a great day, odinn, and please keep on posting. We don't have a spider expert here.

Pop in to our "other pets" forum frequently, we sure could use your knowledge for the spider questions! Mind you, they are few and far between.

In some pet stores around here you can buy tarantulas. Most places don't sell them. Really though, buying a tarantula from a pet store is not the best way to get a good specimen. Online breeders are really the way to go. I got my Mexican Redknee back in 2005 when she was just a spiderling (about 1/2" long) and she has proven to be a very beautiful and strong specimen. As I said though, I'm a dork (maybe geek is the better word) when it comes to spiders (even know their scientific names) so maybe I am just a little too picky.

Odin - OMG Spiders! I've seen big spiders in South Florida big enough to put a saddle and ride and they were poisonous. Do your Trantys bite?

And yes, I think they are cool provided they are in YOUR home and not MINE!

Had some update coonie pictures now that I have 4 babies and 2 new adults to feed but I accidentally erased the memory stick when fooling around this morning with my new wacky digital camera. I also had a few short feeding frenzy videos of the kids hogging food bowls standing in one and eating out of the other.

Want to trade Odin? I'll trade Dink Couch Potato (and the kid is a freebie) for one of your spideys? Shipping not included on the kid though. Kid and Couch potato Dink as pictured at left.

Good eye but no, those are crickets... Although, I know many people that do feed their T's roaches. I would do that but you have to buy them online in bulk and I don't feel like keeping a hundred or more roaches in my house! Lol

Twinkie... Yes, they can bite and they (as well as ALL spiders) are venomous. I've never been bitten as I am careful and I don't handle them. I am told that I'm pushing the odds though since I've been keeping tarantulas since '95 and haven't been bitten yet. They won't kill you but it seems that their bite is very nasty depending on the species. The Cobalt Blue that I had was a particularly nasty species and bite reports about them indicate that they will bite like a sewing machine. The result is a nausea, dizziness, aches and pains, and a blackening of the area for up to 2 weeks. This is why I am careful!

Our pet stores or pretty boring, puppies, kittens, birds, fish, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits.

My grandad used to pick up huntsmen that came inside the house and let them crawl on him before putting them in the garden, I think that has a lot to do with my fear of spiders.

Garder snakes release that smell to ward off things, If you are gentle and have that touch, you can hold one without it smelling up the place!

As a child I used to find garder snakes, black snakes, and copper heads and hold them. (I realize now as I'm older the copperheads were not such a good idea, but I never once got bitten)

There was this beautiful black snake in my grandmother's basement one day, had to be at least 4ft long. He was huge and so pretty. I was the only one willing to get it out of the basement. Funny actually seeing as how I was a 12 year old girl surrounded by middle aged adults, including 2 men.

OOooh I just went through this whole tread page by page! So many cute animals here :)

I forgot almost about the pets I used to have (Camille was rehomed to a friend's, Phoenix now lives with an elderly woman, and Hunter has passed).

In September of 2010 I brought home an 8 week old orange kitten whom I named Char. He's a good boy and such a loving cat. Even after neutering him he still loved me! He plays fetch with his toy mice and loves to sleep with me.

Two weeks ago I brought home Axel, a Blue Heeler Belgian Malinois mix, who is now at 10 weeks of age. He too is a good boy and is very loving.

Sienna as a baby - She is now about 6 months older, and 6 times larger. LOL. VERY lovable, and will NOT be denied attention. I found her with her litter mates on an old farm in the freezing cold. One of her brothers had frozen to death already. :( Sienna was the only one we kept, but the others all found good homes too.

39558

Our Hound, Fudge. He is 1, and also a rescue. He's a lot bigger than he looks. He will eat anything. ANYTHING. And isn't the sharpest tool in the box... but super loyal and very protective of his sister.

39559

This is my Zero. He is an old soul in a 3 year old nervous little body. He suffers greatly from little dog syndrome, but will run and hide quicker than lightning. I rescued him after his owner died, and although they called him a rat-terrier, I think he is more min-pin/chi. He is incredibly smart, and I have trained him to dance, hulahoop, spin, backflip and die dramatically. (it's hilarious)

I also have two zebra finches (oliver and Elliott) but I never can get their pics.
I used to have two cats, Enyo and Freyja but they needed to become barn cats, and so now they live with a good friend in the country and are very fat on mice.

I also had a stubborn foxhound named Hops, but he chose to live with his dad, my ex. I hear he is old, fat and lazy. :)

Ah... some of you may not want to look. One of my tarantulas (B. smithi/Red Knee) molted yesterday and I was able to get some pics of it so I decided to share with all of you! Consider yourselves lucky!!

I have video as well but don't have a clue where to put it... or if you'd even want to see it.

Look away! Look away!!

So that is one spider and one "shell" (sorry don't know the proper term)?
Do tarantulas have exo skeletons? I've never been into spiders, I have a healthy respect for them though.
I tried to look away, but I couldn't, now I shudder.
But that is pretty cool.

The one towards the front is the spider and the one in the back is the discarded exuvium or "shell". Yes, spiders have exoskeletons and molt when they outgrow them. Everything is renewed... even the fangs. You can see in the 2nd picture that the new fangs are white, which means they're soft and won't harden for a day, maybe two. When they molt, they are completely defenseless for the time during and a few days after.

That is so cool Odinn. I've always loved spiders. My husband is terrified of them, which is why we don't have a tarantula. Also, I'm not big on pets that I have to feed living things to. I feel guilty whenever I kill anything.

But I'd get over it if I could have a tarantula. Are they a lot of work?

OK I'll admit, I probably would have never seen a spider molt had I not looked... neat, but omg where's the vacuum! Lol heebie jebbies to the max... shudder.

You really should come visit me in December. My best friends entomologist to the stars is going to be here then, and trust me, 1/2 an hour with him and you'll be begging for a spider of your very own. :)

Not at all.

Crickets a few times a month. Clean water. Uhh... yeah, that's about it.

The hardest part is the initial cost and setting up their living area.

The Red Knee that I posted the pics of is worth about $200 as she is now but when I bought her 7 years ago as a spiderling ("sling") she was $35. There are cheaper spiders out there such as the Grammostola rosea (Rose hair) which is very common and a good starter.

A 5 or 10 gallon aquarium with some pesticide free potting soil and peat moss, a little water dish, a plastic cup or small flower pot, and a damn good fitting lid... that's about it.

Great pets. No noise, no smell, don't need to walk them... just be careful when putting your hand in their tank and you're good to go.

Careful? Me? You don't know me at all. ;)

My ex is an entomologist. For years he's told me that when I can talk hubby into a spider, he'll get one for me, and the terrarium. He'll set the whole thing up, I just have to maintain it.

The only problems I have is hubby (he's terrified of anything with more than 4 legs that's smaller than a pug) and the fact that I'd have to feed it other living things. I'm not big on killing anything in order to feed something else. It makes no sense really. I'm not a vegetarian, I love meat. Then again, I don't go out and kill the animals I'm eating. If I look into something's eyes when it's alive, it's named, and it become a pet. Pets are friends, not food. Sigh.

Crickets... eh, you can get used to dropping them in the tank pretty easily.

I have seen that some people feed pinkie mice to larger spiders... now that I don't agree with at all.

Alty
Sep 4, 2012, 11:06 PM
Wait... I could probably get behind the mouse thing. I have a mouse problem in my garage. In fact, they're taking over. I set up traps, they don't go near them. My husband is talking about buying a snake because he's allergic to cats. I've talked him out of a snake only because the garage is too cold, and they only eat one mouse a month. That wouldn't really help with the mouse problem.

So, how many mice can a big spider eat? OMG! I can't believe I'm thinking about killing the mice! Wait... I already did think about it, and tried to do it, they're just to smart to fall for it.

I'm evil. I must go apologize to the mice now. :(

I guess I should post updated pics of my pups. The bunnies don't really change. Seen them once, seen them a million times. But pups do change.

You all saw the puppy pictures of Rascal when we got him 4 months ago. This is day one, Rascal puppy and Chewy beagle bum.

Awwww! Cobra, he's adorable.

I love cats. I can't have cats. Hubby is allergic to cats. I almost didn't marry him because of that, but thankfully he loves dogs, and bunnies, and birds, and... okay, not the fish so much. The fish were a bad idea. :(

Yeah fish are expensive! My parents had a few but they had to get rid of them because they just costed too much money.

Crap, then I'm doing something wrong.

I have a 27 cent feeder fish that the pet store swore would only live for 2 weeks. I bought it for my daughter when she was 2 because she wanted a pet of her own, and I knew she wasn't ready to be responsible for an actual pet pet, so I got her the goldfish. My daughter is now 10, and the goldfish is still alive. He's outgrown many tanks, and we added more fish because one fish in a 20 gallon tank is really sad looking. The only fish that survived, other than Goldie, is an algae eater we named Fang.

I can't keep any other fish alive, only these two. Saddest thing, the 20 gallon tank is now getting too small. :(

I'm sensing that the fish of the world may need an advocate.
The good things about fish.
-They don't take up much room on the couch
-They are not overly enthusiastic about going for a drive.
-No necks, therefore no leash walks
-The neighbors fish will never come over to torment your fish through the bowl.
-They don't poo on the carpet
They understand that you don't have time for a belly rub, so they ask once and only once. (I know that was wrong on many levels huh?)
-If you are a willing learner they will teach you how to do this.

I see an opportunity here.

Lady Sam, I've often stated on this site that my fish are free to a good home, tank and stand, a years worth of food, drops, you name it, all provided, and all free!

Just say the word and they're yours. :)

Haha!
I'm too busy with the things that take up lots of couch space, and need walking and belly rubs and want to take rides.
Besides how would you get across the border, talk about expensive.
I wonder how much they would charge to ship a 27 cent fish?
All joking aside if you were around the corner I'd take him, I love fish, I just don't have the time.

By the way Cobra-Cute cat and my favorite color too, I have 3 cats and none of them my favorite color.

Mental note to Alty. Start making ladybug pillows in mass production and sell them on AMHD. :)
