I have a roommate that has decided not to pay rent. Now I understand that in most cases I become responsible but there is a line on the lease that says "Each RESIDENT is individually responsible for paying the full amount of rent and any other money owed to MANAGEMENT". However, is says that singular terms include the plural when appropriate but this sentence seems very odd that it would start with each. It is in my opinion that if they planned for a plural in that sentence it should have started with RESIDENT and not Each. Each makes it specific and then the individually would be pointless anyway if it was meant for all. So my question is that can they target me if the lease can be read like this?

You are both JOINTLY and SEVERALLY responsible - pay the ENTIRE rent and sue your roommate in Small Claims court.
