I asked the question regarding a steel statue of Mary the mother of Jesus.
It stands high up on the Continental Divide overlooking the city of Butte, Montana at an elevation of 8,510 feet.
I had the honor of being Public Directions Director during the building and placing of it in 1985 and 85.
It was placed on the mountain top in December of 1985.
The statue is steel and 90 feet tall.
It was conceived by a man named Bob O'bill who had prayed to God for the life of his wife who was seriously ill and said that if God would hel heal his wife he would put a statue Mary up on the mountain in honor of all mothers and of Jesus.
His wife got well so he was asking some of the men who worked with him how he should go about fulfilling his promise to God.
Most of them were steel workers and mechanics.
The men thought that they could help and that it should be a statue human size.
The word about that got to his boss who like the idea but that is should be bigger.
Plans were made and the projected size grew to 90 feet.
The base of the statue would take up a lot of room and so a spot needed to be found.
Another man who owned property up on the mountain top donated the spot, but it needed to be leveled and a big base of concrete poured.
To make a long story short on how it was dome and financed is this.
All the costs and labor was done by people of Butte and other areas, so was the use of the heavy equipment needed.
Now in simmer there is a bus tour to it.
