Our 98 Grand Caravan just started making this really loud winding or blowing sound when it was running so we turned it off. When we did that, it kept turning over just like you were turning the key and trying to start it. Nothing would stop this until we disconnected the positive battery post. If we reconnect the battery, it starts turning over right away again with the key in the off position. It will do that until we disconnect the battery or it goes dead.
Do I need to replace the starter?
Thanks,

Are you saying the engine keeps running, after you turn it off, or just the starter motor?

It just keeps turning over. The engine does not start unless I turn the key over as well.

Sounds like you are saying the starter motor does not disengage from the flywheel. Disconnect the battery and replace the starter motor.

I figured a new starter would do it.

Check starter relay - it maybe stuck closed, putting current into the starter all the time.

How do I check the starter relay?

With the battery disconnected, place a multimeter between the starter lead and the relay(battery side of relay)- if you have continuity (or low ohms), then the relay is closed when it should be open - that's why starter would be cranking without the ignition on. You could try to tap it lightly with a hammer to free the spring up, but I bet it needs to be replaced.

Does the starter need to be replaced or just the relay?
