I currently reside in PA. The children's mother lives in TN. The mother has not seen the children since May of 2008. At that time I left her because she was a drug addict and was a danger to herself and the children. I took the two youngest children, now 5 and 7, and left for my hometown in PA.
Today the mother has offered to give up all parental rights if I do not pursue child support, which has already been filed in PA and TN. My question is if she voluntarily gives up her parental rights does also this free her from the financial obligation of raising the children? Keep in mind she has contributed only 100 dollars of financial aid in the past 18 months. Also, she has restored her nursing license in TN and is financially able to support the children.

Did you read the sticky on terminating rights? Its not going to happen unless you are remarried and your wife is going to adopt them.

You cannot just give up rights.

At the top of this forum are some sticky notes that contain information about frequently asked questions. We put such sticky notes up there to help members, not to have them ignored.

As Steve noted, had you read the one on Terminating parental rights you would have had the answer.

No, she can not just "give up her rights" and TN is a wonderful state, they put people in jail very easy and fast for not paying child support.

So unless you are remarried and that spouse wants to adopt, they are not going to give away any rights.
