We just had a home built. The builder said they wired the living room to have a separate fan switch. We just bought a new ceiling fan (with light) to replace the ceiling light in the room.
When I removed the ceiling light, the light had 2 blacks that were connected to a red wire coming from the ceiling. The light fixture also had 2 white that were connected to the one white coming from the ceiling, and the ground of the light and of the ceiling were also connected. HOWEVER there was a black coming out of the ceiling that was not connected and rather was capped.
Here's were the confusion comes in... the new fan has (1) black (1) white and a ground.
Do I connect black to black, white to white, ground to ground and cap the red?
Do I connect red to black, white to white, ground to ground and cap the black from the ceiling?
Do I combine red and black and connect them to the black of the fan, white to white and ground to ground?

Your ceiling fan is remote controlled?

If so, connect it to red and white. Keep the black capped.
