I have a 6 year old cockapoo that has started a behavior a few months ago. Sometime during the night she gets up (she sleeps in our bed, or under it) and pees on the bedroom carpet or the rug in front of the shower. She is fully trained and does not have any issues holding it if she were to be home for a long period during the day. Also every night she goes outside right before bed and goes to the bathroom - my husband takes her out and physically sees her go. It seems as though she is marking her territory for some reason but we cannot figure out why she is doing this. I have scolded her in the morning, cleaned the carpet to try to remove the semll but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have advise as to why she is doing this and how we can stop it (other than crating her at night which is looking to be a very likely event)?

At six years old, you should probably have her checked for kidney problems before making major lifestyle adjustments.

I'm a big fan of providing four footed companions with a "den" of their own. The den should be opaque on three sides and large enough for her to stand and turn in a circle in, but not much larger than that.

A caution about crating a dog. The crate, or den, is a safe place for the animal. It is not a punishment, an exile, or a training tool.

The best is to have an indoor/climate controlled den with an outdoor exercise area that she can use when she wants to.

Had to spread the rep Cats but great post.

Mine love going in their crates at night because they know it's their safe place and they get a special treat.
