I had a root canal 3 months ago and the endodontis left a piece of tool that broke off in my root canal saying that it would be part of my filling. The tooth just recently had an infection and the oral surgeon began doing the root canal over again yesterday. He could not get the piece of tool out. He says that it'll be part of the filling... again! He says that he'll try to retrieve the piece of tool during the next phase of the procedure. I am in terrible pain. He gave me a stronger antibiotic and a pain killer for the pain. I'm afraid if he leaves this foreign object in my root canal, it will only get infected again. How can the piece of tool be taken out of my root canal?

Are you SURE it's the piece of the file or instrument that is causing the infection? Could it be residual infection left from before the root canal was done? You could ask about having him go in and amputate that root?? I'm not sure if that is an option or not but you could ask about it.

It's a new infection. I was on antibiotics for pneumonia right after the original root canal so if there was anything residual going on, I believe the antibiotic would have taken care of it. I will ask him about root amputation. After all this fiasco, I don't want to have to get an extraction and implant. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate your advise.
