My daughter has already found 2 similarities between the two shapes, namely 'they both have 4 sides' and 'they both have parallel sides', but we cannot find a third. Any ideas?

Hello Spearsie. Since we don't have a picture of the two shapes you're talking about, it's impossible to answer. But consider: how do the lengths of the side compare? Also, how do the angles of the 4 corners compare?

:) Many thanks, ebaines. The angles are different, however we have just measurered the lengths of all lines and 2 are equal. Don't know why I didn't see that!
