Hi!
I was injured in an auto accident and received some money a couple of months ago. I used it to pay back family members and friends from whom I had borrowed money. I also settled some cc debt. I am now under water with my mortgage. I will likely lose my house. So I don't still need to pay for a house I no longer have, bankruptcy is a likely option. I know that bankruptcy investigates funds. How far back do they look? If the money is gone can they not let me be bankrupt if they think I should have used it for something else? How long should I wait after having received (and spent) the money before filing bankruptcy?

If it's gone and you can prove it, it's gone. Consult with a bankruptcy Attorney.

They go back 6 months to see what money you received and what money you paid out and to whom. A good bankruptcy attorney will advise you when it is a good time to file.
