How do you know which equation to use?

How do you know which equation to use when answering a question when you are no given things such as time, velocity, or distance on gravity problems?

Well, if it's about gravity, the first formula is:
F = \frac{GMm}{r^2}
Given force and masses, you can find the distance...
or are you asking something else?
