The power steering on my 92' crown victoria suddenly stopped working. It groans and is extremely tight. The fluid level is good and there is a small leak coming from what appears to be a hose. The gear box doesn't seem to have any fluid leaking from it and the power steering pump is completely dry. Based on what I've read about the possibility of the EVO going out; the symptoms are opposite. In that what should be happening is full assist at all times, I have none.

No fluid in the pump means no assist.

Hydraulics pump all the time with a bypass valve.

You lost some fluid. Add the proper fluid and look for leaks. Hydraulic hoses at the crimp fittings are prime suspects.

I'll give that a try first thing in the morning. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks so much for your input! I apreciate it very, very much!

Hoses on older Crown Victorias and Mercury Marquis deteriorate and need replacing. Any auto parts stores carries bulk replacement hose. Once you fix the leak, refill with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. This more than meets Ford's Mercon ATF requirements and will ensure quiet, trouble-free operation.
