View Full Version : Yard Machine by MTD 16.5 HP, fuel, spark, won't start

I just bought a Yard Machine from an old friend who told me that it worked, but needed a tune up. He bought a new mower about 6 months ago and this one has been sitting since then. I took it back to my house, charged the battery and tried to start it. Jumping ahead some, I took out the spark plugs and they are sparking. With the plugs removed it turned much faster than with the plugs in. I also checked the fuel lines and I'm getting fuel to the carb. Any thoughts on what may be stopping it from turning over? I also like to have service manuals, any idea where to find one for model 13A0695G088 TMO-32303907.

Thanks

Check MTD Products Landing Page (http://www.mtdonline.com) for manuals. s/n required.

Spark/check, fuel/check, air/make sure air cleaner is clean.

Use carb cleaner as a starting fluid and see if the mower at least sputters once. If it does, then it's more than likely fuel related.

Check the flywheel key.

Adjust valves.

Does the engine spins about one turn and then stop? If so, it probably needs a valve adjustment.

Does the engine spin multiple times and just not fire? If so, then you probably need to clean out the carburetor.

Hi,
The manual archive is at:
PDF Manual Web Archive (http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/public/manuals.jsp)
And that is capital "O" not a zero after the "A" and the owner's manual, engine manual and parts manual are available separately. Use a 1 for the serial number.
A service manual is at:
K&T Parts House Lawn Mower Parts and Chain Saw & Trimmer Parts (http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/MTD/)
Peace,
Clarke
PS several engines were used on that frame, but check the fuel solenoid if equipped

If I leave in the spark plugs it turns once then stops, with it out it will continue to spin. How difficult is it to adjust the valves?

If it is a Briggs single cylinder it's pretty easy. You can use this video:
YouTube - Lawn Mower Repair Valve Adjustment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjzX-PUjKmo)

If it is a different engine let us know and we'll get you another source.

It's the Briggs and Stratton 2 cylinder engine.
