I replaced an old dryer that wasn't getting heat with a new lg dryer. The new dryer came and it also has no heat, called and complained and they delivered a second new dryer and it also has no heat eesh!

I have checked breaker and it was OK but replaced anyway and still no heat. Replaced receptacle still no heat.

I have tested voltage across breaker and get no reading but at the receptacle I get 110v on both sides but when I check voltage across receptacle I get no reading. I also get no reading on my other 30 amp breaker going to garage but everything in garage works fine, however I do get a 240v reading across all my 15 amp double pole breakers as well as my 60 amp hot tub breaker.

Why no reading on 30 amp breakers and why no heat in dryer.

Please help clothes hanging all over house.

Has any work been done on the service panel? It almost sounds as if your breakers are on the same bus. What type of panel is it?

The motor is usually 120 vac so it will run while the elements need 240.

Is this a 3 or 4 wire cord that you're using to connect the dryer?

Yes we added a 60amp breaker to the panel for a hot tub and moved a few breakers in order for it to fit and the dryer is a 4 wire plug.

Not sure what you mean by breakers on the same bus.

I think the problem is in your service panel. The clue is that when you check for power across at the outlet you get 120 from each hot to the neutral but nothing across the hots. Since both hots are on the same bus there is no difference in voltage, hence 0.

Three wires come into your home. 2 hots and a neutral. From either hot to the neutral bus is 120 vac. Across both hot buses, you have 240 vac.

There are two hot buses in a modern service panel. They distribute power to the circuit breakers. A bus is basically a strip of metal with fingers on it. You plug your circuit breakers into the bus. In most panels the buses are staggered so that as you move from one end of the panel to the other each breaker alternates from one hot bus to the other. You can put a single 120 vac breaker in any location and it will work. If you put in a double 240 vac breaker each pole needs to be on a different bus.

What kind of panel do you have?

Can you post a picture of it?

Panel is a federal pioneer stab lock breakers. 100 amp service top right grey 40 amp double breaker is the dryer (we replaced 30 amp with 40 amp thinking breaker was the problem)

I just went and checked panel closer and I think I know what you mean by same bus now, it just so happened that when we moved everything to make room for hot tub everything fit staggered except garage and dryer, it's 1:25am and a little too much wine so I will try staggering them in the morning when bright eye and bushy tail. I hope this solves my problem and will respond with the out come in the morning.

Thank-you for your insight I think we might of solved our dilemma.

Medic-Dan you solved my dilemma. I didn't have to move too much around, I only moved 4 breakers and now I am getting 240volts across all my double pole breakers and everything is working. I have heat and my clothes are in there drawers where they belong.

Thank-you so much you've made me a happy lady!

Glad to have helped. Enjoy the hot tub and the new dryer!
