I watch a lot of DIY Network and HGTV. One day I was watching Bathroom Renovations and Amy used this 4 piece drain pan thing made of high impact foam. Basically it came in 4 quarters. You trimmed each piece to size and the middle formed around the drain. Then membrane was added and the whole deal was tiled over.

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about and where I can get one of these? We have a plastic insert shower in our master bath and its just horrible. I would like to take steps to start making our MBa as nice as the rest of the house...

Any opinions on these? Anyone ever used one? Seems pretty simple for a DIYer.

Disregard part of my question... Google turned up what I was looking for.

Schluter-KERDI-SHOWER-KIT - Schluter-Systems (http://www.schluter.com/8_4_kerdi_shower_kit.aspx)

The question on opinions remain though...

Hi Steve...

The Kerdi system is the cadillac of DYI shower pans... very little room for failure if all instructions are followed. After installing maybe 35 or 40 custom shower pans/showers the old fashioned way I tried the KERDI system and was very happy with the ease of installation and the result.

Here is a quick video that should help confim just how nice these systems are... ;)

You will also need PART 2 to this video:

Let me know if you have any questions...

Thanks Mark. It looked easy on DIY Network, but for some reason, everything looks easy there.

Any guess how the price (~$550) compares to having a pro come in an put in a custom concrete base? (of course the price different in Boston will be different but a good guess all the same)

Go Sox!

Hi Steve...

Hard to say as most people that install custom pans also price the concrete board and tile job as well... ;) I can say a custom job would be quite a bit more, for sure, as labor has to be factored in here.

Best bet would be to call a few tile guys and see if they are willing to pop by and offer a free estimate. I am sure that they will offer up some great suggestions once they see the place/layout/size, etc...

Good luck...
