Is this going to be under a building permit? Ask the inspector. If not, and you're on your own, what are the uses for? Sensitive electronic? (dedicate the circuit), general use (how many amps maximum). I keep my outlets to a geographical area, 4 - 5 for a 15 amp breaker but I don't think there is any limit other than not having to reset the breaker a lot. Don't forget to mark the panel box the region for that breaker.

There is no limit to general purpose lighting outlets on residential circuits, but all other besides, like commercial, restricition is 180 watts per outlet, derated by 80%, so 8 on a 15 amp and 10 on a 20 amp.

This guideline is widely used on residential for lighting circuits, which includes outlets. Kitchen appliance circuits get two per circuit. Stationary appliances get one per. Like chip mentions, if known special equipment is located, then separate circuits are a good idea.

Really is good to have as few outlets as possible to allow greater flexibility and adds to less trips in high use areas. Course with the amount of appliances now, not a bad idea for bedrooms etc.

Canadian Electrical code recommends minimum of 1A per outlet. The maximum amount of general purpose and lighting outlets permitted is 12 on one circuit.
