Hello:

If you're busted for stealing, how can the government seize the money and still make you pay it back?

Because. They write the laws so they can do anything their little hearts desires. That's why. How do you think the police department gets new cars or new stuff?

Hi twink:

Even if they write the laws, it's STILL stealing. They can't fool me with their pretty uniforms and stinkin badges. They're crooks and bullies!

What? Are you saying money was taken/seized and "disappeared" and the person accused was made to repay it?

No. I'm saying the money was SEIZED by the government and it didn't disappear at all. They just kept it as proceeds from an illegal enterprise, or some such language. I can be more precise if you like... But, I'm suggesting that the government gets to KEEP the seizures it makes, and STILL requires the defendant pay it back as restitution...

I HOPE you can prove me wrong. I'd LIKE to hate the cops a little less. But, I think that's what happens.

PS> We had a post here recently about somebody who stole a million or so $$$. The government seized it, and she's stuck with a million $$$ restitution. Of course, she could be lyin... But, I think that's what happens.

I can only speak for the Feds when I worked for them - money seized, brought across the border, a result of theft/fraud, was returned to the victim via the Police. We never had a complaint that the victim didn't get it back so if the Police took it, I certainly don't know about it. If the "thief" had to also make restitution in Canada, that was beyond "our" scope.

I'm not talking about vehicles and merchandise seized - I'm talking specifically about proceeds from theft/fraud and the like.

Yes, I'd like to change your mind about Cops. I would feel the same way if you hated (or, minimally, intensely disliked, any group. Cowboys or sheep herders. Motorcycle riders, for example). I don't dislike all excons. Some are better than others. :D

I've dated Cops, partied with Cops, blah, blah, blah - I know that doesn't change your mind about Cops and may very well change your mind about me so I'll leave it there. Keep in mind when I worked for the Feds I was a sort-of Cop. But I was a good one and I only weigh between 105# and 110# so I stayed away from your famous doughnuts.

You never hid you cop side from me. But it never discouraged me... I just picture you naked, with your gun belt on. It STILL gives me shivers.
