I've had a strange smell in a downstairs room of my house for a few weeks now. After a good blitz of the room, it was still there and we found it seemed to come from the carpet. However, a good shampoo and clean seemed to do no good. I'm wondering now whether it might be something coming from under the floorboards but reluctant to lift all the carpet and floorboards up, if anyone can give any other suggestions?

The smell has been described as "musty", and "fishy" and "like a dead bird"... it's horrible and I want rid!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

I have seen on several questions people describing musty fishy odors. Often they have traced the smell to an overloaded light socket, such as a 75 watt socket with a 100 watt bulb in it, or a 75 bulb in a 60 sockett, etc. That would be the least damaging place to look next. After that, is there a crawl space under the house? If so, a moisture problem under there could lead to all kinds of smells.

Check the lighting and electric first. Nothing smells as bad as a burnt down house.
