I have just installed a Harbor Breeze Cheshire flush-mount 52 inch fan and powered it up. The light assembly is not installed, yet. When I run the fan in medium speed, either direction, there is intermittent arcing in the switch. I'm not sure if the problem is in the switch or the capacitor. Anyone else have this problem. I am considering taking the unit down and returning it to Lowe's in exchange for a new one.

When you say switch are you speaking of the switch on the wall or the switch on the fan/light? You said you have not connected the light kit. Are there any exposed wire ends that could be shorting?
In other words do all the unconnected wires have wire nuts on the end?

Which switch is arching?

I posted an answer yesterday but it apparently didn't get saved.

It is the speed control switch in the fan that is arcing. The problem occurs only in the medium speed position. The arcing is either inside the switch or where the wires attach. When the arcing occurs, a flash of light can be seen from inside the switch housing and a loud pop is heard.

The wires for the light are well insulated and not a problem.

I have decided to return this fan to Lowe's as defective along with a second unopened fan. I have read dozens of very bad reviews on Harbor Breeze and have decided I don't want any problems.

It's probably the capacitor discharging. I wouldn't worry about it.

But feel free to return the fans and buy Hunters. The Cheshire isn't a bad fan however. Hunter is better.
