Hey all. Listen, I am attempting to install a chain switch to the light on the ceiling fan. It never had a chain switch and all there is are the two wires that go to the light bulb socket. The switch that I bought has a red, black and blue wire. Any idea how I go about putting this thing in?

You need a switch that only has two wires. You can use this one though.

The two wires that go to the bulb socket, one of them is black? Disconnect that wire. Connect the black from your pullchain switch to that black wire. Connect the blue from the pullchain switch to the socket. Cap off the red.

I have a related question: I'm replacing a fan light switch and I'm unsure how to connect the wire that is inserted just above the light bulb. It is tucked away. I don't know which of these to do:

- pull down the white "ring" to expose the connection -> then replace the switch - wires and all

- cut the wires and just replace the switch itself by splicing the wires and all that

(I don't have much experience doing electrical work.)

Thanks very much to anyone who can help.
Steve

I'm sorry, I don't really understand your question. Check out these pullchain replacement instructions, and if they don't answer it, report back.

Thanks for the reply/link. I did read that earlier. In Additional Notes I it says:

This pullchain is a very standard on/off switch and it is simply connected to the two wires to which the old pullchain was connected.

My question is about how the old switch is disconnected (which, of course, dictates how the new switch is connected). Cut the wires -or- detach the wires from their source?

Either way? If you cut them, use wire nuts to attach the new.
