Needed to change some tank parts for my toilet...

Wanted to shut water off from valve... turned knob, and it broke off.
(luckily no water leak)

I have what I believe is called a compression valve.
Old type, probably 4 or 5 turns to shut off water.

I will replace with newer 1/4 turn valve.

Went to Lowe's to purchase and noticed a new type...
Just push into place, no tightening or anything.

Anyone familiar with these ?
Do you use these instead of compression type ?

Any other advice or brand name (the one that broke was approx 14yrs old)

Hey Danna,

You're looking for a Sharkbite 1/4 turn Angle Stop, (see image) They will replace your old compression type angle stop. Of course you will have to remove the old compression nut and ferule first. Good luck, Tom

A few things Tom forgot:

There is a compression ferule removal tool out there. It's necessary to remove the ring.

Yes, there are Sharkbite fittings. They require a removal tool as well.

There is another type of stop which you basically push the back to release the tension.

They all work.

Removing ferrule... will that leave an indention or marking on the copper that could cause a problem with the sharkbite fitting.

If enough copper is extended, would it be easier to just cut off old valve ?

Good point: the pipe has to be nice and round, with no indentation. Otherwise, you will have to cut it off. Always, clean the cut so you don't have high point and/or sharp edge

For removing ferrule nut: use proper tool

Yes, these Push-in type valves are OK to use. Home Depot carries BrassCraft brand.

Every on gave excellent advice, I will add mine also, see the images for the compression ferule removal tool, the other push type angle valve as KeepItsimpleStupid says this one doesn't not tool for removal just push the black plastic in, and also the removal tool for the Sharkbite. If you decide to use these type make sure you have enough pipe for installation, good luck.

My question is... would removing metal clip allow fitting to removed later.

And to install... just slide as far as it will go onto clean, round copper pipe ?
