I have an 11 year old daschund, he has lost the use of his hind legs, and am in desperate need of a cart. We can't afford to pay much, but are willing to try. "Willie" has been with us for 9 years and it is so hard for him to get around. Please, can someone help?Thanks

I am sorry nobody answered yet. I know the carts exist and people say they work. I am not sure where to send you for more info. Perhaps work at doing a net search.

Update on willie... he is able to stand, very little on his hind legs... he was hospitalized for a week, took cortisone shots into the injured area on his back, vet is very hopeful. The hardest part I think is keeping him still. Even in a medium size crate.. he tries to jump around... very hyper for an old guy. It was recommended to me to give him GLUCOSAMINE suppliment, loose weight, and take whirlpool therapy 1-2 times a day, he is on prednisone from the vet. He goes back today for a recheck. A lot of improvement since he came home Friday.

Several sizes are available from tiny dogs to the huge ones... prices start around 250... then up to around 500.
This seems quite reasonable to me, even though we don't have a lot of extra money right now, I think we could afford that- I don't think we will need it just yet, as there has been so much improvement.

I am glad my rather weak answer at least encouraged you to keep searching. Thank you for the update and thank you for posting the link. This time I carefully added it to my store of links I keep to help people. Those of us that love dogs must work together to help each other. When I was lower on the learning curve, some really great people helped me. I still am looking for new ideas and resources. Count on me to be of more help the next time I see a question like yours.

One more point. They always tell you to keep the dog quiet. They never give you any Valium.

Penley,I didn't read your story back to the beginning,but wanted to let you know this in case you haven't tried this yet..
My mom had a dacshund that lost use of his back legs,so dhe took him to her chiropractor & he worked on the dog & he can walk fine now.he did have a relapse,so she took him back & he's been able use his back legs ever since.I hope this works for your pet.

My 11 yr old daschund also lost the use of her hind legs. My chriropractic checked her over to find she has actually injured her front leg which resulted in excess pressure on her back. He fixed the front leg and she got her mobility back soon after. Now she is over 16. Sure beat the vets recommendation to operate on the spinal cord.

Sorry to hear about your baby. I would also have him checked with a orthepedic specialist. You will normally need a referral from your regular vet.

There was a dacshund up the street from me, who lost 1 rear leg and was able to run on 3. Be sure not to let the weight creep up as it will be harder. That dog ran next to my German Shepherd border collie who I had to get a cart for. I highly recoommend http://www.eddieswheels.com , where I had my dogs made. They also sell used carts from people who bought them new there and you can call or email about seeing if they have any used available. When my baby departed , I was able to resell it to someone else who needed it quick and didn't want to wait for a new one. I felt better I was able to help another dog and got a portion of my money back.
They are wonderful, but I would check with another vet 1st, as like others said . He may have sprained or overused another, thrying to get used to the missing one
