What state are you in? And what does your lease say?

I'm going to guess from your user name that you're in Washington.
Tenant Rights Tenant Responsibilities (http://www.rentlaw.com/tenant.htm)
http://www.wsba.org/media/publications/pamphlets/landlord-tenant.htm

I can't find anything on mandatory grace periods for rent.

https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/real-estate-law/five-day-grace-period-rent-393571.html here's another thread from this site where someone asked a about a grace period. I think you might find it helpful

I'm assuming this was meant to be I AM in CA and meant to post in your own thread.

And no, CA does not, by statute provide for a grace period. This is something written into a lease.
