We had a submersable pump run dry and catch fire in our domestic water well, The pump is stuck at 115 ' and the suggestion is to grind the pump and plastic liner out with a rotary well driller. What is the safety factor, i.e.. Burned pvc pipe, etc being left over in the well?

I would think that the grinding up of the PVC well casing would contaminate the well beyond use. Some of the debris may be able to be pumped out but you risk damage to a new pump by what remains.

Basically you are screwed and should count on sinking a new well.

I agree with Harold

When having new pump put in, install a Pumptec. This will protect your pump if well runs drys by shutting it off.

If you can't get the pump unstuck and out of there contaminating your well isn't a option. Drill a new well and secure the old pump so it doesn't fall back down the shaft
Good luck. Tom
