Is it possible for a 7 year old dog and a 6 month old pup to end up getting along.. This is the first time in years I've had a pup around... We've had the pup since yesterday and so far rebel has done the "i'll stand here but ignore you" he will lay on the couch with the pup as long as someone else is on the couch.. groweled at him a few times outdoors.. groweled at him once indoors...

They walked good together when we went to the gas station today.. the pup pulls like a S.O.B and tries to chase cars but I keep a tight hold on him. Where he's from there wasn't much traffic.. he was kept in a hallway because the female dog didn't like him.. he's a big bulldog.. weighs 50 pounds already which is the same as our dog rebel...

Twice outside the pup dropped into a submissive position but he's still a pup and he tends to try and lick rebels face, muzzle and ears.. rebel doesn't like it... is it normal... I don't want to force them together if they don't want to be..

Right now they are both sleeping beside me...

Is it your pup or are you dogsitting?

Sometimes older dogs can have trouble dealing with a boisterous pup.

Try giving Rebel some treats that he only gets when the pup is around.
You need to try and make him think that having the puppy there is a good thing, not just time for the pup to annoy him.

Hopefully the treats will outweigh the puppies naughtiness.

Shaz... it is Our Pup.. Trial run right now... we told the owners that if they didn't get along or if rebel got too depressed and stopped eating we couldn't keep the pup... yea 7 years age difference give or take half a year is a bit of a difference... the pup listens well and will leave him alone if you tell him too.. but he is a pup all he wants to do is play and rebel.. even though he's not super old isn't really a playing dog. Though he did try and play with the pup once this morning.. rebel is allowed on the bed.. the pup isn't.. plus he can't make it that high to begin with right now.. so rebel sleeps on the bed and the pup sleeps on the floor by the bed and seems content with it.. rebel has been getting special treats just for him when the pup around.. and if the pup tries to annoy him all you have to say is "dont bother rebel" and he usually stops right away..

This is some different shazzy I'll tell you.. so not used to puppies

Yes, it's a bit different having a naughty pup around the house!

It can take quite a while for an older dog to get used to a puppy but he should be OK eventually.
If all he is trying to do is get away from the pup sometimes then that is normal.

Just make sure he can always get up on the bed or the couch away from him so he can have his "own space"

What is the pups name, and do you have photos :D

What a sweetie, I love the blue eye.
I have always wanted a Husky for that reason!

They should be fine.
Don't stress yourself out, just let them get used to each other, as long as Rebel has his own space he shouldn't get too upset.

You can't see it well but the top 1/3 of the blue eye is brown.. so he's technically got a marble eye... he's just so hyper.. and is running around 50 lbs already... I've seen the pup drop and be submissive for him... I know shazzy I worry too much don't I

You do worry too much, but so do I so it's all good!

I posted a big panicked topic on here because my dog had a lump on him... turned out to just be a hot spot

Submissive is better than trying to stand up to him.

Has he been neutered or are you planning on doing so?

Lol good to know I'm not the only one who panics... he is neutered... and I agree submissive is better than aggressive. He dropped submissivly twice or three times now to rebel

He just respects him as the older dog.

As Rebel gets used to him (and vice versa) that should stop.

Mind you, I have my tiny little girl here and my much larger male and the male will bow down to my little girl every time!

I am glad he respects him as the older dog.. I hope it does I'd love for them to evenually play together...

Wow really... what an intresting set of dogs you have

So far.. rebel is still being a bit moody... he's always been like that even with no other dogs around.. though he is eating somewhat which is a good sign to me... when we first got him he wouldn't eat for days... but even with the new dog here he's eating... not huge ammounts in one sitting but he's always been a snack all day kind of dog.. eats when he's hungry..

Bathed the new pup.. wow wasn't he dirty... didn't mind the pool though so its nice I can actually bathe him without getting into a pair of shorts and jumping in the shower like I do with rebel

Our Australian Shepherd/Beagle mix has the same feature in her left eye. Its quiet pretty!

She's 4 and we got a 8w old puppy in December. It took nearly 5 months before Millie would adapt, but they are the best of friends now :D

I agree learning.. it is really beautiful... I bet your dog is some cute though...

Thank you for letting me know how long it took your dogs to adapt. Each dog is different but its an example...

Just a little while ago rebel was laying with me, titan came up sniffing his feet and for once rebel didn't even look at him, or even move an inch... that to me is a good step because he usually would sometimes jump up immediately and walk off..

I didn't even think about this...

My mum just bought a new puppy.

She has one dog that is 6 and another that is 4.
The 4 year old you would swear was about 17... she is the grumpiest laziest dog ever.

She introduced the pup to her and she got out of her grumpy ways immediately and started playing with the pup, we were all stunned!
Mind you, it does help that that same dog is also the mother of my girl

You will be fine... Rebel is already getting used to the idea that he is staying :)

Aww what kind of pup did she get? That's awesome that the 4 yr old changed her ways... rebels getting better. Though now it's the boyfriend worrying... what if he chews on things when he's at work... that's what he's worrying about.. so far the pup has not chewed on anything except for some toys...

shazamataz
Sep 1, 2009, 04:01 AM
Puppies chew, he has to expect that.
As long as he has his toys he will be fine.

If he is that worried about it buy some bitter spray to put on the chair legs etc just to ease his mind haha

She got a Mini Poodle, and he is an absolute terror!! I know puppy teeth are sharp but darn... we could open our own piercing business with that little guy!

binx44
Sep 1, 2009, 06:04 AM
That's what I said shazzy... all pups chew... we've been teaching him to just chew his toys.. when he tries to grab things. (which he just tried to grab a pillow) I say NO! And replace it with a toy. Then when he starts chewing on it I praise him.. hope I'm doing it right...
Thing is we don't have chairs.. only couches.. so can it be sprayed on fabric?

Aww what color poodle? The black ones are my fav color but I'm always worried the white ones would get dirty LOL... hmm good plan.. Piercing here... LOL

shazamataz
Sep 1, 2009, 06:44 AM
You can get bitter sprays that are safe for fabric, and even leather, just make sure you test it on the back of the couch in a small spot first.

She got a black one ;) Was going to be getting a brown but the one she has now turned out to be a better dog (conformation wise)

Having a white dog is... interesting! Haha Yeah he sure looks cute but after it has been raining and he has decided to go play in the mud it is not fun!!

Sep 1, 2009, 06:49 AM
Thanks shaz. I'll check that out today when I go to the dr... oo my favorite color :D... she using it for show?

Your right.. titan is merle but he's got some real white feet, legs and head and body so I'm worried he's going to get dirty LOL

shazamataz
Sep 1, 2009, 06:56 AM
Oooh yeah, he will get dirty, trust me! :D

You probably won't even notice until you bath him though, I get that with my boy, I think he looks white and then I give him a bath and realise just how dirty he was

Yup, he's for show. He was supposed to have his first one last weekend but the weather was horrible and it was an hours drive away so she didn't go.

Well he was pretty dirty when I bathed him but he dries out quickly...

I wonder how I'd find out about showing here for the bully I just got.. he's pure with papers. First pick of the litter

TaaDaa Breed Standard:

PURPOSE: Is for "Guardian", "Protector", and "Family Companion".

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Square, powerfully built; agile and athletic for size, and alert. Should give impression of nobility; thereby, the term "BLUE BLOOD".

HEAD: Large, flat across the skull, square, heavily muscled in males.

MUZZLE: Square with heavily muscled jaws; length not to exceed 40% of the skull, from "stop" to "end" of nose, being 2 to 2-3/4 inches in length, plus or minus a 1/4 inch.

NOSE: Color: Black is the ideal color; however, "Gray", or "Liver" color will occur.

EARS: Rose-ears, medium-size, to half-perked with forward roll, carried close to the head.

EYES: Almond-shaped to round, medium sized. Color: Brown is the ideal color; however, "Glass" or "Marble" eyes will occur.

NECK: Thick, of medium length.

SHOULDERS: Short length, heavily muscled, and well tied in with the front legs.

CHEST: Wide and deep with a well sprung ribcage.

BACK: Straight; length equal to height at shoulders.

TAIL: Optimum length; should reach the hocks in a relaxed position; come over the back in an excited position. Final 1/3 of tail to have a gradual upward curvature.

FORELEGS: Straight and extremely thick-boned; toes well knuckled up with thick pads. Dewclaws not removed.

HINDQUARTER: Hips narrower than shoulders; well musculared and in proportion to the forequarters.

COAT: Short-to-medium length; fairly stiff to the touch, with soft undercoat.

COLOR: Any color and white. "Solid colors" and "solid whites" not "Show Stock".

"Show Stock": High points: 40 to 60 percent "color", and "white".
Medium points: Over 60 percent "color", and "white".
Low points: Under 40 percent "color", and "white".

SIZE: Males: 22 - 25 inches at the withers, weighing 70 to 90 pounds. Females: 20 – 23 inches at the withers, weighing 50 to 70 pounds. 1 inch variation in height is allowed. 5 to 10 pounds in variation of weight is allowed.

Note: The male’s height should not be less than 21, or greater than 25 inches, at the withers. The female’s height should not be less than 19, or greater than 24 inches, at the withers. The male’s body weight should not exceed 100 pounds, or be less than 65 pounds. The female’s body weight should not exceed 80 pounds, or be less than 55 pounds.

Note: However, there may be on rare occasions where a male may weigh in at 110 pounds, and where a female may weigh in at 90 pounds. Therefore, these "Alapahas" can be bred back to a smaller male, or female, to normalize the Breed Standard’s body weight in the pups. But, to place the larger "Alapahas" into a "Conformation" show-ring, they would fail to meet the breed’s standard.

Unfortunately I am not sure how you go about entering shows in Canada as it would more than probably be different than Australia :)

Wow shaz... you are so awesome.. I keep forgetting where you live though LOL... thanks for the breed standard. Will have to make some measurements I think... though he's still a pup and has lots of growing to do

shazamataz
Sep 2, 2009, 01:29 AM
It will be hard to tell while he's still a puppy, they go through the "puppy uglies" where they pretty much lose all their good looks and galoomph around like idiots :D

I would suggest going along to a dog show (You can call your local kennel club to find out where and when they will be, check the phone book) And get friendly with some other people with Bullies, they should be able to help you out and let you know all the details of how to enter and check out your pup for you :)

Well.. guess it doesn't matter now.. boyfriend is most likely breaking up with me.. doesn't trust me he said.. doesn't love me like he should. Felt this way for months. Feels like I am a best friend he sleeps with... I walked in on a conversation between him and his mom on the phone or I never would have found out until after I left for college... pup is being returned today

Sep 2, 2009, 04:16 AM
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that.
Did you have any idea about how he was feeling?
I'm here if you need to talk, just send me a message or fb me.

Any way you can try to patch things up or is that it?

Sep 2, 2009, 04:40 AM
I don't know.. he says there is a 10% chance he won't dump me.. but my say doesn't matter in his decision

shazamataz
Sep 2, 2009, 04:43 AM
If he isn't willing to try and work things out, and you have 'no say' in his decision, then to be honest hun, he's not worth your time.
You deserve better than to find something like that out by accident, he should have come to you and told you if he was having problems with your relationship.

binx44
Sep 2, 2009, 04:46 AM
I know.. but I love him so freaking much.. more than he realizes. I find out today if he wants to end it. When he gets home

shazamataz
Sep 2, 2009, 05:03 AM
Let me know how it goes.
If you do stay together though, be strong, make sure he knows you won't stand for his crap, otherwise he might take advantage of it knowing that you would come back to him.

I have threatened to break up with my boyfriend many times, the last time I admit, I did take it too far, he stood up to me and we finally talked about our problems instead of just arguing about it.

Good luck.

binx44
Sep 3, 2009, 03:56 PM
I will let you know how it goes.. as of this morning he says its over... but I don't think I could handle coming back if it was going to go like this again...

If he wants to stay with me then I've got a lot to think about before saying yes... things that need to be talked about...
