I have an MTD Yard Machine with a B&S 14.5 OHV. I was given this mower a week or so ago by a "friend". It didn't run when I got it as it had been sitting for about a year. I freed up the motor and put a new battery and solenoid on it. I drained the gas and put some new in it and adjusted the valves to their correct clearance. I had to clean the starter and flywheel and finally it cranked a few days ago. It did not run long and then cut off. It cranked back up the next few times with the same result. Now, it will turn over but won't start, I have a spark. I took off the air cleaner and housing and am looking at the carb/choke linkage. I noticed there is a small think spring on part of the linkage but do not know what it is or if it is hooked up correcly. I have tried to find some linkage pics on the web but there arten't any to be found. The motor is a 287707-1224E1. I have also uploaded some pics to see if the linkage may be the issue was to why it won't run.

Took one picture and put three arrows in it. The smallest arrow points to where the link is bent. The other two point to where you have both a manual choke and a choke-a-matic link. Do not know why both are there.
You also may wish to check the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the carb. It could be gummed in the closed position; spray carb cleaner and working the plunger may free it.

I made sure the linkage was hooked up as you say. I also sprayed some starter fluid in the carb and it fired up but did not run but for a second so it has to be a carb or solenoid issue as you said. The question I have is how do I remove the solenoid? I took the wires off but do not see how it is attached. It turns but does not seem to come loose.

The case will spin, but if you spin too much you will break the wire to the plug. There will be a pair of flat areas on opposite sides of the top of it that a thin wrench can grip and remove.Peace,
