Hey Guys and Gals,
Im hoping someone will be able to help me to find a fantasy novel series from the 80's. I remember that the book(s) were about a young man, who somehow became an apprentice blacksmith. At some point, he was working with the Dwarves and learned to put dwarven runes into the weapons and armor he made. There was also a love interest of his, but he wasn't able to be with her. At some point, the King that he worked for, had his legs broken so that he would never be able to leave. The blacksmith made a suit of winged armor and a magical spear and flew away. That's all I can remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I don't know who wrote the version you remember, but evidently it was based on the legend of Wayland Smith. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_Smith).

Now that link lists a book from the late 80s that features Wayland, Raymond E. Feist's A Faerie Tale. but I don't know if that's the one you're thinking of.

Was it by any chance a series novel from Dragon Lance?
