I was phoned by a collection agency at work regarding and account that I owe and was willing to settle. The representative offered a program to assist in loweing my payments, and then ask for my banking information and I declined and explained that I have been burned by giving that information t o a collection agency and that I didn't feel comfortable with this method He tthen became irate and hung up. I never received any written correspondence from them. 3 months later received a call requesitng that I take care of this debt with another offer. I ask that he put this in writing and I would respond in writing. I received and e-mail but from a different person. I received a call from the rep asking if I received the offer. I stated that I did and ask if the would forward a letter validating who they were. He attempted to tell me they were legal, blah, blah. I sent to them a debt validation letter on 8/3/09 the day after I received the e-mail. Today I received a call from same rep stating that they received my letter but because it was not within 30 days they did not have to respond. I explaind that I did not want to send to an unknonw $1700. This to has happened before to me , paid off debt to collection agency per offer and now am receiving calls regarding the same debt. What should I do? Is the 30 days from the date of the first call or written communication which I never received other than the e-mail received on August 3. and is there a validation letter without the disputing of the account?

Keep disputing it and telling them you want to dispute it until they do validate it.

If you have an 800 # for them you can look them up here

Refuse to even talk to them on the phone, inform them that they are not to call you any more. Write them and ask for the debt to be proved.

If it happens on the phone, it never really happened, any deal they make on the phone is not a real deal anyway.
