My mother has to go to an assisted living facility. My sister and I have power of attorney. We have discovered that my mother has created approximately 15,000 in credit card debt. She has dementia. She has been paying minimal payments, but there will be no money to continue these payments because the majority of her SS check will go to the assisted living facility

First its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's. This can lead to confusion. You should start a new thread. So I've moved your question to its own thread.

Send a letter to the card issuer(s) that your mother has been diagnosed with dementia and will be going to a facility and signing over her SS to them, which is her only income.

Ask then to please close the account(s).

DO NOT acknowledge the debt or make any payments to them.

Try to find an Assisted Living facility that is not to costly so that you can pay towards the credit card. Many elderly people prefer to go into a Residential Care Home / Personal Care Home because it is cheaper and its more homelike. What state do you live in?

Doesn't matter where she lives if she has dementia, and it most likely will only get worse so I agree with ScottGem,notify the cc companies and let them know her illness will send her to a home and there fore the ss she gets will go for her care.
