View Full Version : Got an interview

Hi everyone,

Well, it's time for me to get back to work. I applied for a job the other day, just got a call for an interview.

I'm very nervous.

It's been 10 years since I've been in the work place. Over 10 years since I've gone to an interview.

I have no idea what to expect, what's changed since the last time I did this.

They want three references. Do they just want the names, addresses, phone numbers, or a letter of reference? Letters are going to be hard, I haven't worked in 10 years, calling my old employer up for a reference isn't going to be easy, if it's even possible.

Scared here. My stomach is doing flip flops.

I have until Thursday.

Gulp.

Any tips?

Okay, listen now... first thing, keep the sex talk to a minimum... K?:D:D:rolleyes::eek:

Remember Post It Notes, well YOU invented them ;)

For references I'm pretty sure they only want names/address/phone numbers/how you know the person. It's sort of usual (?) to ask for personal references AND also business references.

If you haven't worked in 10 years it's not unreasonable not to have current business references.

I'd explain that at the interview -

As you know, I've been dating and, trust me, it's like one long job interview. Hope that made you smile.

Alty, I would do anything to be where you are at this time in your life. I hope you know that.

Lie?

No sex talk?

That's all you boys have for me? ;)

First, the interviewer is a woman, so, sex talk, not going to happen.

Second, I'm really bad at lying, I suck at it.

Ahhhhh!

Really, I'm terrified.

OMG! I have nothing to wear!

What if I don't get it?

What if I do get it?

I'm going to suck my thumb.

Thanks Judy.

This isn't a career, it's just a seasonal job. It would start in October, end in March, then, if they like me I'll be asked back in October.

The thing is, the salary is great, so it would be like working a full time job all year. The months I'd be working, also great, because I could be home with the kids in the summer.

My neighbor told me about this job, she interviewed with them last week.

I'm over qualified for this position, still, I'm 38, I haven't worked in 10 years. I'm so darn scared.

Posture (sit up straight-pay attention), smile (but not too much), look interested (but not wide eyed silly), short answers to their questions (unless you have to explain something, but yeah, keep them brief), towards the end of the interview, you ask some questions to show interest (no jokes) and finally, well dress appropriately......:)

Also, tell then that you are very interested and what you would [/B[B]]like about this job. If the mood is right you may even ask when they will be making a decision and when you can expect their phone call... shows confidence.

Take a deep breath, smile at yourself in the mirror, list the reasons they'll be lucky to have you and sail into the interview. You'll be fine. I promise.

Just be yourself, don't lie, don't drink coffee, stay calm, sleep well, it's not that they are going to kill you, it's just a job interview. And yes NO sex talk

GOOD LUCK!! :)

I've never been good at interviews. I babble, because I'm nervous.

I forget everything, including my name.

I'll probably pass out.

The thing is, I do know what I'm doing. This is all data entry, easy peasy, could do it in my sleep.

I know Ben is laughing now because it's computer work and he knows how skilled I am at the puter. But, this is MS word, no brainer, can do. :)

Do you think taking valium before the interview would help? ;)

Ah, I also have to find a sitter.

Anyone available on Thursday? ;)

Yes, valium would be a good idea. In fact, offer the interviewer one. Try to bond with her.

A better idea would be a stiff shot of whiskey. Vodka is not good because at least with whiskey they'll KNOW you're drunk instead of thinking you're stupid.

Alty, in the midst of all this joking around there is some good advice, especially being confident in yourself. :) I interview people all the time and that is one thing that I look for among other qualifications of course.

Be strong and confident, 'the only thing that you have to fear is...........':)

What!

What do I have to fear?

OMG, now I'm afraid of the fear!

Seriously though, I'm really nervous.

I know I have to do this. I hope I get the job, I know it's just an interview, blah, blah, blah, but this means something to me. This is a huge deal to me, for many reasons, not least of all getting back into the job market.

This is also a test. Do I still have what it takes or am I old news?

So much is resting on this.

I'm usually very confident, but about this, not so much.

It's been so long.

It's not like riding a bike, you can't just hop back on, the rules have changed, I don't have a helmet! :(

Besides, I was never good at riding a bike.

Just so nervous.

That sort of thinking will make you nervous. Example, when I have an important sales interview I actually pretend that I have already gotten the job and that the interview is only a formality. Helps me be more relaxed. Some things work, some not so much...

Good luck, I'm pretty sure that you have nothing to worry about hon. :)

Thanks new person (sorry, I forgot your name :().

I'm going to get a new suit on Wednesday.

I'm also going to print out my resume on very nice fancy paper, because I can. :)

I'm going to throw up Thursday morning. I'll probably get into an accident on the way to the interview because I'm so nervous, then I won't have to worry about it.

About the whiskey Judy, does beer work?

You're all wrong; every last one of you.

Alty, all you need to do is this:
1. Buy yourself a laptop
2. Set your self-spanking bunny avitar as the background.
3. Bring said laptop to interview. Open and place directly in front of your future employer.

If they don't hire you on that alone, you don't want to work for a jackhole like that.

Cool cool... well, I guess the best thing to do is to be enthusiastic about the position. Show them you can fit into the company, will do a great job there and won't think of it just as a paycheck, but as something you enjoy doing.

I know that's hard, but more than just your smarts, employers are attracted to your personality and your enthusiasm about the position you applied for.

If it is just an application they usually just want the name and phone number.
I haven't interviewed for anything yet but here's some stuff people always say to do:
*speak with confidence
*look directly at the person. Don't look in another direction then back at the person and then in another direction again.
*don't say "um..." or "uh..." too much or at all when you are thinking of what to say.
* don't play with your hair, touch your face, scratch yourself, etc..
*practice with someone or with a mirror (lol)
You probably wouldn't do any of the weird things listed because you aren't a teenager like me, but just remember! Good luck alty! :)

Give yourself a pep talk.Tell yourself you are capable of doing this job,you are reliable and you will be an asset to the company.
Know that and you will show that.

Fake your confidence until it becomes real.It works!
You will be fine, just don't let them know how overqualified you are.
I have not been hired for that reason before and I was shocked when they told me that.I had never heard of such a thing.
I also don't think you need to buy a suit.A skirt and a blouse will be fine.
You will do good!Your strong and smart and determined, all great assets!

It's normal to feel nervous Alty. :)

I'd like to greenie Stringer about something he said, that was indeed a good advice: find some questions to ask after the interview to show your interest.

I've do some 'data response' some months ago concerning two people (a man and a woman) getting interviewed. One of the 'strong points' of the woman was that she asked questions after being interviewed, which was highly showing her interest in the job.

There're also some other little things that you perhaps need to remember, details that you may forget:
1. Have some chic and charming wear.
2. Never show your back to your interviewer (even when leaving the room, after that, you can) except if she accompanies you to the door.
3. Be as calm as possible, avoid stumbling, try to keep eye contact.
4. Try to be succinct with your answers.
5. Try to keep a smile, a faint one works enough.

:)

I bombed the interview big time. Stupid me. I was so farking nervous that I started rambling. I'm lucky they didn't ask me my name, I don't think I would have been able to give it to them.

Also, the secretary I talked to lied. They did want references from previous employers. Three of them. Um, did you not read my resume? I haven't worked in 10 years, the job I had before that I was with for 5 years, before that I was in college.

Do you really want to talk to my former boss of 20 years ago? I don't think he remembers me, if he's still alive!

Then they started the questions.

One of the questions, and I kid you not;

If you were a vegetable what would you be and why?

I said kumkwat, because it sounds silly.

Ya, I don't think they'll be calling me.

Beer? Okay!

JoeCanada76

So, either way, I have plans. :)

Also, the book, my ducky book. I have a publisher that's interested (yes, another one) and he'll be calling tomorrow. If that book gets published, weee! If not, I'll go the self publishing route, only $300, sadly, I don't have it right now. :(

You were supposed to worship the new Bunny lamp.

The remote controlled Venus Butterfly needed to be ready to run to knock the edge off the interview. Best if the remote is randomly activated by another party far away.

Your folder had to have some bunny pics to generate interest and then the entire bunny album handy,

With that , the door will hit you on the way out.

Things not to say when a woman is interviewing you for a job:

"So, are those boobs real or implants?"

"I'm prettier than you are."

"So do you have some sort of problem with your metabolism or is your whole family heavy?"

"Is that a photo of your husband? He looks familiar to me. Has he ever screamed out the name Alty in his sleep?"

Also, the book, my ducky book. I have a publisher that's interested (yes, another one) and he'll be calling tomorrow. If that book gets published, weee! If not, I'll go the self publishing route, only $300, sadly, I don't have it right now. :(

What happened with the publisher??

I told you it was good! If they don't go for it then you should definitely put money aside to do it yourself!

I could, but we're going to stick with my van for a while.

The van only has 53,000 km on it. Yes, it's a 2001, but the only problem was the problem
We're having fixed.

I would like something smaller, to save on gas, but I think I'll wait. This job will be in my neighborhood, a 10 minute drive if the lights are against me. ;)

Thanks Stringer.

I never claimed to be like most women. ;)

I'm the penny pincher in our family, always have been, at least when it comes to things for me. I have trouble spending even $10 on a new shirt, I'd rather buy something for the kids.

Hubby actually gives me a hard time about it, but, when we're out at the store, even if I really need something, I'll usually end up putting it back so he and the kids can get something instead.

I was raised to save money. I was also raised to support myself and no matter how much I do at home, take care of the kids, etc. etc. I still have a hard time accepting that I don't bring in any money.

Does any of that make sense to anyone other then me?

Speaking of school uniforms, I have a theory.
Has anyone noticed that Public schools often have mainly female teachers, where the standard uniform is usually polo shirts, and private schools often have a lot of male teachers, where the uniform is often white shirts of a thin material that goes see through when it rains? I don't think it's a coinkydink.
Not that I'm complaining, at the private school I went to, my favourite time of year was the rainy part, for many reasons :p

Alty, your phrase of "stirring the poo" conjures a really, really terrible mental image.

Well, Cal, I don't know the ratio of male to female teachers in my school, it seems to be balanced... (public one)

shazamataz

Speaking of school uniforms, I have a theory.
Has anyone noticed that Public schools often have mainly female teachers, where the standard uniform is usually polo shirts, and private schools often have alot of male teachers, where the uniform is often white shirts of a thin material that goes see through when it rains? I don't think its a coinkydink.
Not that I'm complaining, at the private school I went to, my favourite time of year was the rainy part, for many reasons :p

Alty, your phrase of "stirring the poo" conjures a really, really terrible mental image.

Haha yes that is so true

Our winter uniform consisted of a heavy plaid skirt and a light blue shirt with a tie.

We had to wear black stockings as well.

Well the black stockings would always slip down during the day, so we would hike them up so our crotch wasn't down to our knees.
We got in trouble off a male teacher one time for doing so behind some lockers!

Our summer uniform was a very thin dress... white with a blue tartan pattern

Hi kids.

I'm back and still alive. :)

When I said that a monkey could do this job I wasn't kidding, as long as the monkey can read and write.

It was a fun day, it went by very quickly. Basically all we're required to do is fill out the forms for the patients coming in to get the shots, occasionally helping some of the elderly with canes, wheelchairs, etc. to find a spot to sit while waiting and answering questions.

I got there at 8:30am, the doors weren't supposed to open until 9am but they forgot to lock them after the staff came in so we got around 1 minute of instructions before we got put to work. It's easy, just a lot of writing. My hand is cramped but I'm sure I'll be okay. ;)

The best part is the people. Right now it's mainly the very old and the very young. It can go one of two ways, annoyed, grumpy, just not happy with life people or extremely sweet, wonderful, make you smile people. Thankfully I got more of the second then I did the first.

Remember when I said that the age group of guys attracted to me is 18-25 and 60-death, well I proved it today. In the 8 hours I was there I got 4 candies, a chocolate and a $2 tip. The other five girls got nothing, I was beginning to feel bad, promised them the next candy I got they could fight for. ;)

My boss came out after my shift was over to congratulate me, told me she had gotten quite a few reports on how wonderful I made the experience for these people. I'm glad. :)

So that was my first day. Surprisingly I'm not tired, in fact, I could have worked another 4 hours if I didn't have to go home to the kids.

Tomorrow I'm back at it, 4 hour shift. :)

I really enjoy spending time with the elderly. All they want sometimes is someone to listen to their stories. They prove that the saying" the older you get, the better you used to be" is true.

I plan on doing some volunteer work, and taking my two boys with me to help, at the area nursing homes.

Most of the guys that age are gentlemen, but watch out for the "dirty old" ones. I'm sure your husband has nothing to worry about. Tell him you're being hit on by guys in flannel pajamas.

All year in this position isn't possible, the flu campaign is only for 6 months, but if they like me I'll be asked back next year.

It's perfect for me, work until March, take time to build my tables for the farmers market in summer and have the summer off with my kids.

It works. :)

I have to say that they were all gentlemen, even the one that touched my face. It's funny because it was just a friendly, grandfatherly type thing but as soon as he did it it's like he realized that he may have crossed the line. When I said "My goodness your hands are cold" and laughed, he grinned from ear to ear, as if happy that he hadn't offended me.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. :)

The second day was even better. I really love it. I was actually excited to go to work today.

No candies today, or chocolate, but there was one kind 80 year old English professor that adored me so much he asked if he could kiss both my cheeks. I told him he could kiss one. He didn't expect it, so he took my hand and kissed that instead. There was also a lady that asked if she could buy me a coffee because mine was out. Of course I declined but that was so sweet.

My boss came out front, took me aside to tell me that everyone in my line up had commented that I had made their experience wonderful. They forgot that they were getting their flu shot. In fact, most of them stopped by on their way out to say good bye to me.

I love it.
