Hello all my name is denny and I have a question about a montgomery ward I recently purchased. OK I bought a dependable power plus 8. 4 speed riding mower and can not find any info on it the model number seems to be the problem it is xyj-33801. It is orange and kind of white right side discharge. So if anyone knows what year or who manufactured this model for montgomery ward that would be awesome! Thank you for the help.

Hi,
Could be MTD or Gilson. Tell me about the four speed; "H" pattern with first and second in the same leg of the pattern?
See if this link looks anything like it. Also, the number off the engine, if original, tell you the year it was made. 1980's I think.

crigby,
The four speed is located on the right side of the seat on the fender and it moves in a straight line farthest back is rev. then neutral then first through fourth. The engine model is briggs and straton model number 190707 0852-01 74062411 this is how it is listed if you can help again that would be great. And anybody else like to take a crack at it that would be awesome. Thanks again!

Hi,
The engine was made on June 24, 1974; built in to the last set of digits.
That is unusual for a shift pattern unless the machine uses a chain final drive.
I will see what I can find, but the older the more difficult. I worked for the Western Auto authorized repair dealer about that time.
Peace,
Clarke

Hi,
Nothing that old on:
http://lawnandgarden.manualsonline.com/
Though there are some old ones, so the wise thing to do might be MTD Customer Support at 1(800)800-1730, I think; or use Ask a Question at the site:
Find Answers (Page 1 of 27) (http://support.mtdproducts.com/cgi-bin/mtd.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php)
For an answer. Many years ago a gentleman named Bob Schuck was the national service manager (I would think he is retired) and I have reason to believe that the ManualsOnline site is using many of his old manuals because of the notes written in on some of the old ones.
Peace,
