My hamster is about a year old now and was healthy when I got him. I think he is sick though because of the way he looks and acts, he also looks lathargic. I had him in his playpen the other day and I laid out some towels under him because he digs in his food and I didn't want him to make a mess on the floor. Well I went to clean his cage while he was in the playpen and I guess I must have had him in there to long because when I came back he was trying to escape by chewing on the towels. Im worried that he might have eating some of the towel and now it is in his body but I'm not sure. He acts mostly like himself but sometimes when I try to pick him up he moves away and tries to hide so I won't pick him up. Could there be any other reason that he looks sick?

I'm sorry to hear that. I used to keep hamsters, too. I noticed that sometimes they would be really spunky and other days were just lazy bums! Either way they had a lot of personality and kept the dogs entertained, too (running on the wheel and such).

Is your little guy still passing stool? If so, and as long as he is not vomitting, I would call it safe to rule out an obstruction. What about eating and drinking? Have you noticed any change? If so, I would take him to the vet. Also, if he is still acting like this in a few days.

Keep us posted and good luck!
