But at least here for some simple assult, it may be a year, for some more serious it could be three years.

If you mean you as in YOU personally, like how long do you have to call the cops after an assault.. If THAT'S what you mean, you have only a day or two. Any longer than that, the cops are going to suspect you are reporting them for some OTHER reason, and the assault charge won't stick.
