I have a flat roof with a slight pitch. It is a 1 floor addition on a 2 story house. I noticed a leak for the first time the other day after an unusually intense rain. The roof is a couple of years old - it was redone just before I moved in. The roofing appears to be slabs of tar/asphalt. The joints/overlaps are sealed with tar. When I look at it, there are several potential locations where the leak could be occurring - either on the overlaps or at the edge where the roof meets the wall of the second story.

Should I coat all the potential holes with tar and see if that helps?

And/or should I coat the entire roof with aluminum paint?

The attic space is not accessible. Nothing protrudes through the roof.

Thanks for the help!

I faced this situation a few years ago, my garage roof was completely flat with leaks. A roofer advised I just tar the whole thing and up the sides as well. It is going to be almost impossible to find the leak, unless you want to get up there with a hose and have someone else keep watch inside.

Since the roof is angled and the leak appeared close to the top of the roof, I could tell that the leak was toward the top of the roof. I sealed up potential holes with tar and a putty knife. It's been a month and no signs of leak.
