Hi,

I have a valid I20 until 2011. F1 visa expired in December 2008 and am going to India for renewing my visa in August this year. My first application for an F1 was rejected in 2004. Thereafter, I deferred my admit and reapplied for my visa in December 2004 and got it. If I am asked on what grounds my first application was rejected, what should I say? I was not given any reason then.

I would sincerely appreciate if someone could give me some suggestions.

Thank you.

The consulate usually gives you a form letter checking off the reason for a denial. So you tell them the truth, you were not told why. This should not be an issue since you were granted the F visa after the denial.

Bring lots of documentation of your maintaining your F-1 student status; registration, tuition payment, transcripts, school ID, etc.

Shakh: I am assuming you were applying for the first time when you got a reject. Did the VO give you any specific reason? If yes then try to address that and ask yourself what makes you different this time around. Do you come across as too eager to get to the US? Do you come across as a potential immigrant? Are you going to work on something very specialized in the US? Is your academic background in synch with what you want to study? In my opinion, there is no correct answer to address your dilemma. I know cases where people were repeatedly rejected and some who got it through the drop box application process. I am not even sure if they still have such a facility in India. I was rejected many years back when I applied for the first time. I deferred my admit and went back for the next semester and was very confident and had an "I don't care if I don't go to US attitude." I guess, just be confident. Good luck!
