We have a 5 year old GE side by side refrigerator freezer GSS22QGPD CC that has ice crystals forming on the bottom of the ice maker compartment and inside the chute that carries ice to the dispenser. After several weeks, the water dispenser stops working. We turn off the freezer for about 3 hours and then the water dispenser works again. We had a repair person look at it and his recommendation was to replace the door of the freezer due to a breakdown in door insulation which causes the water line to freeze up. We did not replace the door as the water dispenser began to work again once we turned off the freezer for a few hours.

There is also a whining noise in the freezer at times. Could this be a defrost fan that is not working properly?

Suggestions are welcome!

We had the Same problem! Loud whining noise in the freezer and the water line froze-up. Service tech said the heating element that prevents the water line from freezing had broken and, just like you, we were told the entire door had to be replaced to fix it, as it is a sealed unit. My wife uses the filtered water a lot so we paid for a new door. We told him to fix the loud whining noise but he said there was nothing to fix -- they all do that from time to time and even pointed out in the owners manual that it is considered normal operation! Unreal. Its so loud that during a dinner party people will stop talking and ask me what is that strange noise? I have to explain that our GE Profile refrigerator is "operating normally and never to buy one". I am so disappointed in GE.
