I have a Weedeater lawnmower model 425133 with a Briggs & Stratton sprint 3.75hp motor, model 98902, type 0131 01. The pull cord on the 'easy start' starter is not retracting, so the mower won't start, or if it does retract and start it has an awful squeal. I see no way to get just to the reel to inspect it, or later on if need be replace the starter cord. If there's any suggestions on how to fix the retraction/squealing problem, other than getting a new mower, please let me know.

T/Y.

Hi,
It is not the starter itself that is the problem; rather it is the clutch that it attaches to when the starter is in place. They are sometimes serviceable.
Remove the starter/blower housing from the engine. Then remove the two screws holding on the screen (they also hold the clutch together and are part of the clutch.) The clutch can be disassembled with gentle tapping and trying to pull the center up (I use a hammer handle.)
The clutch consists of the center ratchet, 6 ball bearings, outer carrier and cover (and possibly a washer under the ratchet between it and the carrier.)
Clean the bearings and carrier with an oily rag. Clean the tip of the crankshaft that the center ratchet goes on with fine sandpaper, emery cloth or steel wool. Once clean very lightly coat the tip with a small amount of grease (more is definitely not better in this case.)
If there was a washer, lightly grease it and install, then the center ratchet, then the 6 bearings (one in each carrier slot) anup the cover back on. I use the hammer handle again to lightly tap the outer edges of the cover to seat it. Now install the screen with two screws and then the starter housing.
This should complete the repair. Just enough lubrication is used to keep it working freely; too much would get in the bearings and prevent them from moving freely.
Peace,
Clarke
