My 1986 Micra 120,000 km has a broken timing belt. My mechanic told me it will about $200 to replace this, however, he won't know if the valves would be damaged until he opens up. My question is would the valves be damaged and if so how much would that cost approx. if any idea. Also, prior to this the car never burnt oil or had smoke, it just stalled while driving and wouldn't turn over but just crank. Any help would be very useful as I am low on finances and in desperate need without a car. Thanks very much!

He's just saying, the valves MAY be damaged, hopefully you'll be lucky, High performance engines are more prone due to high compression pistons.
