I have found a TraneXE80 furnace model# TUD140C960115, serial# P1130WP1G. I would like to install it until I can afford a new high-efficiency furnace. Is this a good furnace, and is it worth pursuing as an option?

The Trane XE80 was a OK working unit BUT It is impossible to tell the condition of a used furnace from here. If you have anyone that you know that does furnace work they could do a heat exchanger inspection. A visual (what you can see) type inspection is only so so because you cannot see all the hidden parts and pieces. It would have been great if you could have seen the furnace in operation before its removal.

NOTE Most furnaces are usually not removed without a reason. Usually the reason is the fact that the furnace has problems so approach this used furnace with a bit of caution.

You are going to spend some time and $$ to hook up this used furnace. Before I would waste that time and money I would do a temporary hookup and see if it runs before making a investment.

One last option is to hold off and see if you can get enough $$ during the summer and fall to just get a new furnace. Sometimes making a decission for the sake of saving or delaying the spending of money just does not work out well. This is the reason my company did not install used equipment in a residential setting. To many problems and then naturally the customer would try and blame us when the used equipment did not work out to well. We did install used equipment in the industrial and commercial setting but you are talking equipment that can cost upwards of 500 thousand to a million dollars and that equipment was of a lifetime quality construction since it could be rebuilt forever. It was worth buying used to save a few hundred thousand knowing it could be rebuilt and brought back to spec.
