Hello I have a GE tfx22krdww side by side refrigerator and it's approximately 8 years old. Recently I've had to unplug it about once a month to remove the buildup of frost in the freezer portion. I really need to get this fixed but because of the economy I was hoping I could repair it possibly myself. I have a friend that knows a little about refrigeration actually he works on furnaces and air conditioners but I'm sure he could help me with the repair if the cause could be determined. Most freez ups are due to blocked or clogged air ducts in the circulation system or a bad heater. They actually have a heater inside to make hot air for a few moments to regularly melt the frost before it builds up. Maybe you're friend will be able to test the heater.

Also test the defrost thermostat. If the heater and thermostat both test good the replace the defrost timer.

Been trying to find my post to think both of you!! Yep it was the "defrost heater" well actually my friend replaced both the timer and heater he said it's best to do it that way opposed to trying to figure out which one is bad. Well that was weeks ago and it's working fine saved a bundle Sears wanted 250 to do the repair. Actually think I could do it myself if it ever happen again. Thanks for the help!
