View Full Version : 2 months poodle puppy with parvo~ I don't know what to expect?

My little poodle Dodo is my first dog. It's the second day since he's be hospitalized for parvo.
I bought from a person on craigslist 4 days ago. She has 3 poodles, and I picked the strongest big brother. I regret that I didn't ask detailed info on his health history since he's so active and happy, the only thing I know about him is that he just got his first shot. I don't even know whether he's really 2 months old. I was planning to take him to the vet on Mon for a whole check and vac.
Dodo is doing very well the first two days. Playing around the yard, following me everywhere in the house, barking at my cat (he's a fearless little guy), eatting dry food but not a lot. He is a little guy want to be companied very much. When I was out of his sight, he'll groan in a very cute way. He's so special to me.
The third day 11am, he started vomitting. First are some mixed dry dog food, 2-3 times later, are very watery vomitting stuff. Then sleeping on my bed and don't want to move.
I call right away and make the first appointment at the vet. The diagnose is the parvo. It's been two days, no obvious progress. Almost in the same condition as the first day I sent the puppy in there: vomitting, no eating and drinking, but no diarrhea. They found parasite this afternoon in the puppy so they give extra treatment for parasite along with IV. One thing I don't understand: why he recover so slow even though he doesn't has any diarrhea?
I weep every time when I see Dodo's watery round eyes in my mind. He's a little puppy needs caress and love so much but now he's in the isolated treatment room by himself in the dark. I feel so sad that he has to go through these.
I don't know what to expect. I've read some very positive stories in here, and even some 8-9 weeks puppies made it through parvo. I really want to go hand in hand with my puppy till the day he gets better.
Tomorrow will be the third day. I don't want to think what if no progress on the forth or fifth day. The treatment fee is still raising, and he's still suffering, and I'm still hoping he will get better tomorrow.

There are some happy outcomes but there can be bad outcomes as well.
It's all up to how strong your dog is and how well he reacts to the medication.
Unfortunately in young puppies it is very hard on them and they struggle through the treatment and sometimes give in.
In saying that though, if you have a little battler then there is a chance he will make a full recovery, only time will tell.
I'm just preparing you for the worst case scenario.
It still amazes me how such young pups can contract parvo, but being from craigslist and from your description it is unlikley he would have had any vaccinations at all or he was exposed to the virus because the breeder just did not know anything about raising puppies.
When we have young puppies at my mums house we get doused in disinfectant before we are even allowed through the door! :D
We have never had a dog with parvo so hopefully someone else here can tell you exactly what to expect in the recovery.
Good luck, and hang in there.

I got a call from vet this morning. He still doesn't want to eat. The vet will perform a blood test and x-ray to see what's going on internally.
Does any one know some puppy eat something he can't not digest so then vomiting?

If a dog eats something like a bone or rawhide or even something like an old sock it can cause a blockage in there intestine making them very sick.
Have you noticed him chewing on anything he shouldn't or any of his toys been detroyed?

We were allowed to visit our puppy while he was in the hospital recovering from Parvo. We had to step in a bleach solution before going in and the same when leaving, plus of course wash our hands.
He was there for a while (month maybe) and had a permanent scar on his nose from pushing against the cage. He lived to be 17, which is pretty good for a 45/50 pound dog.
I'm attaching a picture of Winston after he got home. (sorry, really old picture) been hanging on the fridge for years.

Thank you Dahlia for your pic. He's such a cute dog.
I'm planning to go and see him this afternoon.
I got another call from vet. The x-ray is fine, nothing really there in his stomach just some gas. But the blood test is not good, a lot of things are below the normal. The vet even suggest a blood transferring if no progress.
The puppy is really depressed comparing the day before. And don't eat, which makes me really upset. He's in pain and not in a good mood.
It'll cost me a fortune but I wan to go through together with him to do what I can.

Check to see if your vet will take payments, it's easier that way and you can budget it in.:)

Cute pic Dahlia :)
Does he have any favourite toys or a special blanket?
You could take them in as a comfort thing.
Obviously you won't get them back when he gets out of the vets though :)

I'm so sorry you and your dog have to go through this.:(
I would suggest bringing in something like a blanket or a toy as shaz suggested.
For now you should just wait for your puppy to (hopefully) get better.
I wish you the best of luck.

A favorite toy would be nice!

Thank you guys, I like your suggestion about the toy. But the doctor says that I'd better not visiting the dog since it's virus and I may still have that. So does the same with his fav toy--a chewing bone :( I want to bring Dodo home to cook him some chicken soup but it's not suggested since the virus at home.
The vet is going to do plasma. It's like a blood transfer procedure. The little guy is so depressed today according to my vet. I'll be together with him to support the treatment! I'm still keeping a very positive attitude~ He's the best and the very first dog I've ever had.

Yea, that's the spirit, be confident and your dog will be confident too.
I wish you the best of luck and hope your dog gets better soon.
Good Luck!:):D:):D:)

Has your vet told you how to treat your home and yard yet? It's a combination of bleach and water and you spray it on everything! The bleach content is low, I didn't have to worry about bleach stains.
If your pup was in the yard you need to spray your yard and maybe put out a sign for other dog owners, so they don't let their dogs go in your yard.
We were told Cats can not get Parvo, but can carry it to other animals, so we had to spray a cat that we were baby sitting (they had Rotties at home) and she never liked us since.:(
I'm sorry you can't visit.:(

He's cute. He likes to keep me in sight. When I walk away to the kitchen or something, he'll be unhappy.
So may be left him at the vet makes him think I don't want him. :(
I'll go to the vet later today to discuss his situation. These days I wake up so early like 6:30am, hoping to hear some good new from my vet. :o

After all this time, I forget to update dodo's situations here. He's covered, and very very energetic. And he's getting along very well with my corgi, and my cat.
I want to thank shazamataz, Just Dahlia, joyluo1999, bulloxer33 for their support and suggestions. Even though you guys just put in some words, but they mean a lot to me back at the time when dodo's hospitalized. I just want to say Thank You!

Sorry to hear about your pup, hope he recovers.
As for the vet bill, sometimes they will let you volunteer to clean kennels or feed or something to work as your payment.
My brother-in-law's puppy had parvo when he got it. It is a lab greyhound mix somebody put on his doorstep. The vet told him a couple times throughout the treatment that they did not think he would survive till the next day. But he pulled through and today he is a 95lb dog who is 11 years old and a nanny to 2 small children.
Keep your chin up and show your puppy how much he's loved

I am very glad to hear that Dodo is doing well. He looks absolutely adorable.
You know, I think I have a stuffed rabbit around here somewhere that looks like that. :)
