On October 16,2006 I was awarded custody of my niece by the Juvenile court of Covington county Alabama. Her mother signed over her parental rights to me. Since then she has resided with my family in Garrett County Maryland. I want to transfer custody to her step father in Ohio. She will be moving in with him and he needs custody of her to sign her up for school. Is there a way I can accomplish this without a lawyer? I have the rights of a mother and want her to go live with her step father and half sisters. I do not have a lot of money and can not afford a lawyer. Can you help me figure this out? Thanks, ssaccident62

She is a child, not a pet that you can just pass around. You are going to need a lawyer to transfer custody - because it is highly unusual and might not even be possible as there is no biological connection to the step father.

You can get an order of guardianship that will allow her to be registered in school, however.

First, please pay more attention to posting guidelines. There is a Read First sticky in the Children forum (where this was originally posted) that directs question of a legal nature to this forum (where I have moved it).

I would like more background here. Why were you awarded custody? Why did the mother relinquish her rights? Where is the father? Was her step father married to her mother? Why didn't he get custody then? Why do you, now, what to shift her to another family? How old is she?

There are just too many questions here to offer advice.
